I know the cokin p system seems to be the most popular and I can use this with alternative filters (Hitech, etc). But does anyone use the Z holder, and should I be looking at it.

I understand the Z is for wide angle lenses. I would be wanting something to use with both my 10-20 (77mm i think) and 24-70 (a shocking 82mm diameter!).

So, I would be looking to buy 1 x holder, 2 x adapter rings, various filters.

Would i get vignetting with the P on the 10-20?

IIRC I think I was still getting vignetting at 10mm with the P wide angle holder, but it was ok from 11mm it was ok -it's ages since I used it though...

Oh, excellent, I can live with losing 1mm :)

Especially since it's about 20% the price of the Z!

I have the P holder on the 10-20mm, I find anything under 14mm is shocking! At 10mm you can actually see the holder through the lens.

I would recomend the Z series but I think they are much more expensive?

Hmmm, a differing opinion. :( I was going to ask if being full frame makes any difference, but the Siggy 10-20 doesnt fit FF does it?

Ok, if I am going to need to look at the Z, then this opens this right up price wise...

Here is my revised brief having done some further reading, can anyone advise?

• Must fit wide angle (10-20) and normal (24-70)
• Ability to hold more than one filter
• Ability to independently rotate individual filters
• Mustn't fall off into the mersey or any other river ;)

Budget is within reason whatever is needed to get what I want. If it's too expensive, i'll just have to buy filters in stages or put em on the crimbo list :)

I have just got the Cokin P system, and its ticks all bar your wide bullet in your brief. (I am assuming that as I don't have a wide to try it on.

I put this to you,

How often will you be planning on using filters on the wide, in both the near furture and on a more long term basis.
How often will you use more than one filter on the wide lens?

The way I see it, these are the 2 fundemental deciding factors, because, If your only going to use them on the odd occasion, and useing less than say three, could you not get the P system and then when you do want filters on the wide, use a release cord and a tripod, freeing up a hand to hold the filters gently against the glass? A crude option I know, but a cost saving solution none the less.

If your going to use the wide and filters a lot now, or plan to in the future, then going for the Z would make more sense if you can afford to stratch p a price bracket, future proofing yourself at the same time.

Not sure if that helps, but if I were in your shoes its how I'd be thinking.

I think use will be HUGE. I love getting up early and going to the coast for dawn. Catching the sun coming up is giving me the biggest buzz out of anything i've photographed in the last 6 months. I am on the north east coast, and wide works well IMO opening up huge expanses of beach, sea and sky.

The whydangle pee if only having 1 slot seems very limiting. I can imagine needing to combine ND's, GND's and a polarizer. My aim, is that although I can do stuff pp in PS CS3, I really want to try and catch it all in camera.

Can you independently rotate the different filters with cokin? ie: combining a GND with a polarizer.

Ultra-long-term (couple of years maybe) i can see myself going full frame. And I've already learnt too late that some/most/all of my lenses won't work FF, so really dont want to make that mistake with any future purchases.

I use one of THESE on my Siggy 10-20 and it works just fine.

Aha... I was looking at that. Is that 'just' a holder, that holds upto 4 filters, then I need an adapter ring for each of my two lens sizes same as with cokin?

What size/make filters are you using with it?

That's right. It clips on to the adapter ring attached to the lens, which allows for free rotation when using Polarising or ND Grad filters.

I currently use Kood ND and HiTech ND Grad filters, all in 'P' size (the grads are actually 85mm across but work fine).

I have the Cokin Z. At 10mm on a Sigma 10-20 the filter holder can still be visible, but only at the corners of the frame. A move to about 11 or maybe 12mm and it's gone. Otherwise a very minor crop will sort it out.

With hindsight I would go back and just buy the Lee system. Especially if there are no issues at the ultra wide end.

So P size work ok on the sigma 10-20 wide lens?

I too have been looking at buying filters as I want to do landscapes and I've seen some gorgeous sunrises and sunsets but look crap without filters. Colour is always lost or forground lost to compensate for sky.

Anyone that uses filters for those options what would you suggest to use? i.e. grads, nd grads, colour and anything else i missed.

john
