Sorry, another question... I will do something by way of an intro before long :)

Cokin P Filters... In particular ND filters... It's been suggested that I start my ND collection with a ND4 hard graduated filter. However, such a thing does not seem to exist in the Cokin range. I'm wondering whether a non-graduated ND4 inserted part way in to the holder might be the way to go? Anyone tried this?

Cheers

The non graduated would be crap - you'd have a big line across the centre that wouldn't be pleasing at all.

There's a set of HiTech filters going for around £35 somewhere online - I've lost the link due to a reformat, someone might be able to post it up.

They fit into the Cokin P holders.

Is it 'Hard' ND Graduated filters you're after or 'Soft' ND Graduated filters ?

The density is the same (represented by the number) but the blend is very different.

Soft ND grads - have a gradual transition for general landscapes whilst Hard ND grads have a very sudden change - suitable for very level horizons such as seascapes.

As mentioned - Hi-Tech do a nice set of 3 filters (3,6,9) in both soft and hard for about £40.

The hitech ones are seeling on Ebay now, looks like an athorised dealer. See link

Jack,

As Dinners says the hard gread are brilliant for seascapes especialy at sunset sunrise when there is such a contrast between the sea and sky, I just need to get myself a set.

Thanks for the feedback and links. Seems as though the grads set is £70 which forces it down my list of priorities for the time being. Perhaps I'll go for the soft grad Cokin instead as my start point. Thanks again.

I wouldn't buy the cokin ones. I have a set and just don't use them due to the magenta tinge they add. Stack two together and the world turns dark purple

I agree, I have the Cokins and the purple cast is quite bad, its easily enough removed in light room. Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know of if the hitech ones are any better, are they actually neutral?

Yes they are.

They're more 'Neutral' - far less colour casting.

When I get home I'll double check where I bought a set of Hi-Tech Soft ND Grads from as I've not time to search for the old thread just now.
