i have been researching a new Filter system for my landscape work, i am looking at the Cokin p series or Cokin zPro series ...

( i cant afford the Lee Filter system yet!)

has anyone had much experience with the Cokin series of filters ?

advise please !!!

Hundreds of threads on filters with 99.9% favouring Lee and rubishing Cokin usual criticism is a colour cast. I understand that some early Cokins did produce a cast particularly when stacked but the problem was resolved. I have yet to see any evidence of colour cast or a direct comparison of filter manufacturers products. My take on it is that much of the comment is hearsay and jumping on a bandwagon or Emperors new clothes symptom.

Now I use Cokin Z Pro ( grads and full NDs) and see no evidence of colour cast and have stacked two filters but never more. My filters were bought last year (September) and I am quite happy with them. For 10 stop NDs I use circular screw in (Helliopan) and again find them to be neutral and perfectly satisfactory.

Hope that helps, I am sure that someone will be along shortly to say something quite different, each to his own.

thanks

I bought the Cokin p series set up the other week..
The only issues ive had so far were when trying to get hold of the kit from local shops.. as cokin have apparently gone into administration.. i really struggled to get a 58mm adapter ring as it seems new stock wasnt being sent out! im told that cokin will return but have no idea if this is accurate.

as far as the actual kit goes... im very new to photography and really cant comment on the optical quality of the filters.. however there seems to be a reasonable choice.
The system is very easy to set up, the adapter rings screw on quickly, the filter mount is plastic.. id prefer metal.. but it seems quite solid.. my only grudge is that the filter mount & filter rotate if you tilt the camera.. im not sure if theres a way to stop this or not!

Cokin apparently had problems with filters and a magenta cast, they supposedly resolved this. I have no problems with single grads but there is a very slight cast if I stack them it can however easily be removed in pp. I bought my Z Pros last September / October.

i think i will save up and get either a set of Z pro's or the Lee system ... better get a re-mortage for the Lee's though!

Whatever you do get the Lee holder it's the best of the bunch by a long chalk

Yeah mine are fine too!

Nothing wrong with the P sized system, it's just Cokin's own filters do have colour cast issues. I use Hitech ones whic hdo not. I alos use the cheap ebay no name holders and rings, so I don't mind butchering them with a scalpel if necessary.

I am sure there was a problem once and it's now a case of give a dog a bad name and a lot of Lee hype ( they are very good ) and a lot of people that have heard people say that Cokins are poor and just repeat the same. Still mine work OK:razz::D

If buying again I'd buy Lee, British aren't they? and if they are that's reason enough to pay a bit more.

Mine too. Never had a problem. How odd that experiences are so different.

i used them for the first time at Lulworth cove a couple weeks ago ..not impressed :'( it has put me off buying any more Cokin P filters !

think i will save up for the Lee system..

thanks for all your comments tho guys

What went wrong? Did you get the cast that others have had?

Maybe it's a batch thing? Can't think of any other reason why some scream "colour cast" and some (like me) say "no probs."

well the ones i got must have been the bad batch ! live and learn!

Kood do some really cheap ones that fit the Cokin system, might be worth a look?

yea i looked at them too like the Z pro too but for just a bit more you can get the Lee system .. but they are terribly expensive ..ARE THE LEE SYSTEM REALLY WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY THEN?? oops blooming caps lock!

I have never had problems with my Cokin P filters either  but I don't use them an awful lot to be fair. If it was really worth upgrading to Lee and I would use them more I would.

Don't bother I don't understand why people invest in cokin there crap why would someone put low grade stuff on your top camera equipment why bother having expensive camera or lenses

Buy Lee there tops

i thought that because they had been around for so long they must be half decent!! ..start saving for some Lee's i think!

Have you looked into the Hi-Tech or Formatt Brand of filters?

They are made in Wales UK. Unlike Cokin, they use proper neutral density substrate darkening, rather than just dyeing, which leaves more colour casts. Their pro-filters at least.

I don't like Lee filters. Their ND grads are impossible to work out where to place on the horizon.
