I'm thinking of getting the square Cokin Neutral Density Filter Kit and associated ring adaptor rings for my Canon 5D with lenses 16-35mm, 24-70mm & 70-200mm all L series. I'm wondering if this is the best option and are there any shortfalls or issues that I should be aware of?

Also I have screw in UV filters for all my lenses for safety reasons, as I'm sure most people do, and I was wondering if I should leave these filters on when using the Cokin system.

The only issues with the Cokins Ive experienced is a slight colour cast, usualy browny/red.
Should be easily fixed in PP though. And the cost of the adapter rings is a bit cheeky, but there you go.
 
As a newby to DSLR i bought several different ND filters to try.

:gag:Don't buy the cheap chinese ones on ebay, they are useless, not only do they leave a colour cast, but they make the picture look like it was taken through cling film, and they are not optically flat :(

I tried a friends Cokin and they put a sepia cast.

I got a set of "neewer" brand ones on amazon, and they seem okay, but again start to put a megenta cast when combined.

I finally bought a set of "sevendayshop" home brand screw-ins and I must say for a cheap filter ( < £5 for 52mm ) they are excellent. I haven't tried a full test yet, but they seems to leave no colour cast even when I combine the ND8 and ND4, and the pictures remains crisp and clear. And at the price, I have simply bought a set for each size of lens I use.

As soon as it stops raining,:D Im going to try to do a full test.

If I can work out how to do it, I will attempt to post a picture review on the webspace my ISP provides.

If by squarei you mean the Cokin P filters you may experience some vignetting with the 16- 35 mm at 16mm, I would opt for the Cokin Z Pros. As I have said many times I use these and see no colour cast however I may just be lucky or perhaps blind:D. If you are looking for 10 stops then a screw in may be your best bet I personally use Helliopan but there are others like BW.
 
My Cokin P121S ND8 has a green cast to it. I also have a dirt cheap ebay ND8 round filter, which has a really vivid magenta cast, and appears to have been cut from very ppor quality glass roll.
 
Thanks for your advice guys I haven't seen any thing you say that's really adverse to put me off the Cokin filters yet. As for the wider angle vignetting petehb mentions I believe there's a wide angle holder to over come this and I can't really justify the additional cost for the Z series. Hitech I've seen good comments but don't seem to be well established so a little concerned about getting future additional equipment Cokin looks more established and more readily available.

What about my question about my existing screw in "safety" UV filters should I remove these or does it have no adverse effect, would really appreciate this answer?
