Cokin Filters

yes
you need a 52mm adapter which screws into the lens filter thread

the P holder slides into the adapter
the filters slide into the holder
you can raise/lower the Grads to coincide with the horizon

standard holders holder 3 filters which "may" cause a vignetting prob
if you want to use the 18mm end of your lens a lot, I suggest a wide-angle adapter which only holds 1 filter

that's a pricey way of doing it ?

you may find you only use the ND4 to start with

get a generic 52mm adapter and holder of eBay............"here".
then buy one ND4 filter to get you started

you can download a Cokin filter brochure showing filters and photos of the effects..."here"

Do these holders turn with the lens auto focus motor?

Cheers how much id a wide angled one?

Was also thinking of getting a IR filter and some welding glass if you have any ideas wheres good to get these too :)

For less money you can get Hi-tech grads which I think are a bit better than cokin. Something to bare in mind :) I've never needed a wide angle holder with mine. the regular holder only shows up when I get down to 12 or 14mm

Yeah, if your lens' front element spins then the holder will too.

Welding glass can be had for a couple of pounds off ebay. Mine was a seller called dark mutton.

If the end of your lens turns when it focuses then this will turn too (not ideal at all). In that case I would assume your only option is to focus first, lock the focus, then attach the filter.

Looking forward to replies on this as I am currently looking at exact same cokin starter kit.

If the end of the lens rotates when focusing then once focus is achieved all you have to do is rotate the filter holder back to the vertical - it's free to rotate :)

HTH :)

Thought of another solution for the rotating front element, you could get a cheap circular polariser (keep as is or remove the glass), attach the filter holder to this then add a wee bit of weight to the bottom of the filter holder and the filter will always origin itself once the zoom has finished.

Generic holder now ordered from link provided, thanking you :)

Last question (honestly and sorry !), how many stops does the ND compute to (roughly)

ND2 = 1 stop ?
ND4 = 2 stops ?
ND8 = 3 stops ?

Okay, just ordered ...

Cokin P ND4 soft grad (£16)
Cokin P ND8 full grad (£14)

Thinking ND4 to balance sky in daytime exposure, ND8 probably used in conjunction with ND4 to lengthen exposure a bit for water etc.

see how it goes from there.

Thanks for advice.
