I'm presently reading the latest Peter James novel in the Roy Grace series.

Many years ago I dated a guy who was training to be a locksmith in Worthing, amazingly there is mention of a locksmith
who works on the locks at Lewes Prison of the same name.

Do you reckon it's coincidence ?

Wouldn't be the first writer to use a pseudonym :-)
 
Flukey coincidence if it is just that... maybe someone somewhere knew someone and never thought the name would be recognized, be interesting to dig deeper and find out
 
Peter James' Roy Grace series is ace. Tho I think I started in the middle and went back to the start and I'm now on No 4 I think.

I've been looking at those for a bit, you recommend them as a good read then?

Yeh, they are brilliant and there is a couple of common themes running through them as a bit of side interest too.

Yes Trace they are brilliant and being quite local to me makes them even more interesting (y)

I've read a few of his non Roy Grace books as well and they are just as good

I will, i'd have a hissy fit otherwise, i like order:D just debating kindle or not.. normally i use a kindle but with a series like this i quite like having the collection...

Familiar places in a book do make it interesting and a totally different read, that's quite cool.....i don't think i have read any of his so he should keep me entertained for awhile

The whole series is excellent.... more twists than a twisty turny thing.. the whole "Sandy" thing is a bit of a cliffhanger as well.
 
Just about to start "Dead Mans Grip" as I am working my way through loaned books.

Best author I have read for a long time, and knowing the areas they are set in is an added bonus too.

His research is superb.

I seem to recall that Peter James has used the real names of people who helped with part of his research for the book concerned e.g. he has used the names of real police officers in books, with their permission of course, and I think he has also run competitions for readers to have a character named after them in his next book. His books usually have an acknowledgements page and these details are included there.

Oh, and they are great books, too :)
 
Peter James wouldn't be the first author to do this. Ian Fleming put Geoffrey Boothroyd - firearm expert and writer - into the Bond series as the Secret Service's armourer, and Ian Rankin auctioned the opportunity to appear in one of his books for charity. I'm sure there are other examples too, apart from using the names of historical characters and well known politicians.

It could be a coincidence that the character in the novel shares the name of a real locksmith - the likelihood increases if it's a common name - but I think the real coincidence is that Ingrid dated the guy years ago and came across his name in the book. Mind you, I suppose lots of people knew/know him, and there's a pretty good chance that some of them will read it.

One of my teachers at school was Dr John Watson.

Not read the novel referred to in the OP so no idea of the locksmith's name but it could be a fairly common name so pure coincidence. I'd be surprised to see my real name as a character in a novel - if it happened, I would assume that the author had grabbed a phone book although my name isn't in the yellow pages!
 
Nope not a common name and looked at the credits and nothing there either although I seem to remember the same
character cropping up in a previous book, not 100% sure it was the Roy Grace series
 
Well I've just finished the book and now can't wait for the next, so many cliff hangers
Don't worry @BRASH I'm saying nothing ;)
