Just a bog standard cup of coffee made with a standard jar of coffeee and so many people get it wrong (like I did for years)

If you pour boiling hot water on the coffeee it burns the beans and makes it bitter... put a splash of milk in first then the hot water.... much better...

If you burn your coffeee then try it and report back :)

I don't drink the stuff (nor tea) but whenever I make it for others I always mix the coffee with the milk first then put the water in if it's not black coffee they ask for like.

Water first...but it shouldn't be boiled.

Always always coffee milk then water...!
But milk last with tea.. Teabag water milk then teabag out when it's strong enough :D

Just a quick instant - I do the water first (not boiling) then milk. I find (depending on the coffee) that milk first results in floaty bits that haven't disolved.

Boling water and a good few mins for tea though.

Can't stand it when people shove a tea bag in the cup, pour milk on it and then the hot water.

Of course, the yummiest coffee uses no water :-)

As others have said you should use water off the boil for coffee

It's the slight froth to milk and the floaty coffee bits I love!.. Lol

As for tea when I see people putting milk in first it makes me want to shout 'don't you know HOW to make tea!' :D

From what I gather milk first stops the teabag releasing it's magic

oh absoloutly!

Yup, absolutely WRONG!!! Hot water in first to warm the pot (or at a push the mug). Tip out and as quickly as possible, tea (bag if you must) followed by boiling water. Leave to stew until it's at the strength required then into milk in exquisitely fine china cups. One lump of sugar chiselled off the loaf and stirred (MUST be clockwise or the flavour molecules get scrambled) until fully dissolved.

As for coffee, it depends very much on the type, species and roast of the beans. For instant, the recipe's easy - open jar, tip into bin! Most espresso machines hit the grounds with water just under boiling point and Arabic/Turkish/Greek coffee is actually brought to the boil in the brikki. If you MUST drink the instant filth, putting milk in with the granules/powder usually results in little floating bits of undissolved coffee so let the kettle cool for a minute or so before pouring into the mug, follow the water with the coffee then sugar (if taken [brown tastes better in coffee]) and finally milk.

Fine china cups?? Eek no!...big monstrous chunky mug thank you very much :D

nope.. I already washed the cup in hot water.. and already washed cups I rinse in hot water.. so nagh nagh :) :)

Seen that a couple of times in this thread... strange as its never ever happened to me...

Anyone putting milk in coffee should be burned at the stake for heresy - strong and black is the one true way (and yes filter or perculator not that strange instant stuff which is a little bit like coffee but not)

Tea for me is easy, mug, tea bag, boiling water and that's it. Don't even bother taking the bag out suck the tea through it for full flavour.
Coffee I agree with water that is off the boil and then if it's possible and safe (not driving etc) a large measure of Baileys.

Correct

I like tea but how can people put up with those bits of paper and fine as dust recovered tea-powder? by the way water first, and milk is only needed for black tea.

Nice Cup of Percolated Coffee with semi skimmed milk poured in last, no sugar accompanied with a Danish Pastry ( already plenty of sugar in the Danish ) . This is what a friend and I did the other day, while sitting in the garden, and chatting about Cameras.

Why ruin coffee with pollution like milk and sugar

To hide the taste when it's instant and to make it more to my liking when proper. I often drink it black but much prefer it sweetened to "sketo".

Instant is fine if it's good, Nescafe, Kenco, Douwe Egberts. Non of that tesco rubbish. When I go to peoples houses to valet their cars I get some really disgusting coffees, but at least they've bothered as some don't. I get some customers who make me a 'proper coffee', one lady does every time I go (monthly). YUM!!

Who cares? It will still have that horrible coffee taste.

Tea made in a teapot. Poured into cup before adding milk.

Steve.

Instant Coffee smells better than it tastes, it can smell lovely when you open a fresh pack, yet tastes of nothing!

All instant tastes the same to me.. Rubbish :p

You either havent given the better ones a chance or your palate is numb...or.....you're just a coffee snob  :-)

Most instant Coffees can have a nothing sort of taste, while Kenco Rich is not too bad for an instant Coffee. Needs a good heaped spoonful for a nice kick.

Definetley kenco rich... I can't stand Nescafé or gold blend I'd rather go without

I remember the ads from the 70s telling us that Maxwell House and Nescafe were the best, Can't recall Kenco getting plugged in the 70s. Best not mention the Coffee man plugging (best be careful here) gold blend I think, ( the flirtatious Coffee Couple ;) ).

Carte Noir made with cream instead of milk - lovely flavour.

The only time I use instant is when making a frappe and that's so cold you can't really taste the coffee! Always use Nescafé for that (and buy a few sachets when we can to avoid having a jar open for ages.)
