COD: Modern Warfare 2

Getting really bored with trying to get 8 people in to a game for the matchmaking to drop half the group. Sometimes it's taking us 30mins to get a game started :/

After playing for some time IWNet really is rubbish. Most of the time you are connecting above 100ping to the host and a lot of the time closer to 200, which is what we used to game with 56k modem in the halflife days.

They've really messed this up. It's fine if there is only a couple of you trying to get in a game but big groups are pants.

Yeah but then surely you'd just play a private match?
Or are you talking about say, 8 people on ground war?

I never have trouble connecting to a game and I'd say 1/10 games have lag and 1/10 of the laggy games are unplayable and end up disconnecting.
I'm on university internet which takes several minutes sometimes to load up a youtube video, I can't play counter strike because it constantly disconnects, and most of the time I'm connecting to games of 50ping on MW2...

The aiming does take getting used to if you're used to mouse+keyboard, but I personally find the layout of the Xbox controller works better for COD than on the keyboard (possibly because I'm used to xbox...)

my only issue is hitting c instead of v (crouch instead of melee) but I can aim quicker cos its what I'm used to

I bought this last night at 8pm and completed it at 3am, to say I'm disappointed in the single player is an understatement. I think the multiplayer will make up for it though.

Yeah I completed it very quickly. But spec ops and multiplayer are a lot more time consuming. 4h47m to complete SP, but I'm up to 29h31m on multiplayer and I'm level 52 out of 70. I've got 10 out of 69 stars on spec ops and I'm an hour and 30 minutes into that.

I'm giving the multiplayer a go tonight. Can't wait.

I'm currently giving MP a go, and am thoroughly enjoying it.

Well, I was.....

Now, everytime I play the maps most games are just full of campers with sniper rifles and claymores, or more interestingly, people who seem to know where you are at every moment.
Last night I went through a couple of games where I couldn't move without being shot or grenaded (is that a word?). Usually I'd just say I'm rubbish (I'm sure that does have a contributory factor), but I started to paying attention to killcams last night....

There was one map where I would just run past a window, and bang, dead. I was expecting the shooter to be trained on the window, but no, targets were on the other side of the screen, and as I approached the window, he moved them over me, one shot, headshot, dead. What I found weird is his crosshairs moved too smoothly, landed perfectly on me, and he fired. When I aim for someone, I always end up adjusting slightly (I'm only talking pixels) before I am bang on target.

Other times, I get a grenade thrown through a door to where I am, even though the oppo's radar is jammed, and I haven't shot or moved and have cold blooded! That happened a number of times playing with the same players, one guy every time.

I'm probably just being paranoid, and I really am hopeless at the game, but are there any cheats flying round for the game? I'm not asking because I want to use one, I'm just curious if my imagination is getting the better of me.

Apart from the above, when you get a good mix of players in a Merc deathmatch game, it play's fantastically. They just need to introduce player handsignals!

Can anyone tell me why MW2 is an 18? I'm not a gamer but my boy would like this to go with the PS3 we are getting him for Christmas, as he will be just 14 I'm loathe to buy a game with an 18 rating - it's obviously there for a reason.

I haven't noticed any glitchers yet. The assault rifles do seem to be a bit to effective at long range though.

Edit: Oh and guys, I got tactical nuked for the first time last night, awesome. 25 kill streak!

It's been summed up above, but for a little more detail....

SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T PLAYED THE GAME! (the text is in white below, just highlight it to read)

As well as the general blood and guts when shooting people, there are a few bits that stand out:

The 'controversial airport level' - you play as an undercover agent, working from within a terrorist cell. They decide to carry out a massacre at an airport, and take you along with them. You walk through with a machine gun while they shoot A LOT of people, they're running, screaming, dragging themselves along the floor, pools of bodies and blood!. You don't have to kill anyone, but if you try and shoot the bad guys you fail.

Some of the cutscenes are quite graphic, and some involve a captured person with some american soldiers about to torture him for information, and there's a sort of minigame thing at the end where you have to pull a knife out of your chest to throw into the bed guy to save the day!

All in all, I wasn't particularly shocked by any of it (I'm 20 though....), but I've never really struggled to tell the difference between games and real life. As for whether it's suitable for a 14 year-old, the classification people say no, but it comes down to your decision at the end of the day!

The 18 rating is there for parents of people who aren't sure of their children's brain.

If your boy is a well rounded, down to earth kid who can clearly differentiate between fiction and reality, then this game is fine for him.

I was playing 'violent' video games and watching 'violent' films from around the age of 10, albeit with my Dad there to support me should I want to query something. I started playing independently at around 13, and I have to say I think I'm a pretty sorted 19 year old.

I say that the game is fine. It's just got shooting in, and one particular scene of 'meaningless' (one could argue all war/violence is meaningless, but that's a debate for another day) massacre - the notorious, but not all that dreadful, terrorism scene.

I think maybe they could have been tracking you from another part of the level, but I've not seen anything about glitching or cheating online...

Like I said, I'm probably just being paranoid, but it was just very strange.

I haven't played any kind of online game for a long time, but I remember bots in Quake and the old radar cheat, and it just came across as very similar.

Oh well, I think I just need to practice a bit more!

Yeah it's a lot more advanced than the days of Quake :p

Hacker - Ratings on games seem to mean very little - its more of just a 'disclaimer' to stop parents suing games companies. I've been playing various versions of GTA since I was 9/10, and many other 'killing' games and I dont think its had any adverse effect on me :p

Like Foodpoison said, if you son is a smart, well rounded boy then theres no reason to think he'll suddenly get the urge to shoot innocents at an airport in real life.

Not true:

Most games in the UK are classified under a pan-European voluntary system, but those with adult content are required to come to us. We take this part of our responsibilities under the Video Recordings Act very seriously.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/news/stories/20070417.html

The PEGI rating stuff is indeed an industry driven thing and pretty much rubbish, other than giving you a rough idea about the content.

A BBFC classification is a legal thing. If the BBFC say its unsuitable for children, it probably is - especially given that these days very few films at all are given an 18 rating....

BTW, the whole 18 rating thing with this game was just a cheap attempt to promote its sales by a bunch of childish geeks.

If you want realistic modern warfare, you want this:

http://www.theonion.com/content/video/ultra_realistic_modern_warfare?utm_source=videoembed

:D

I didn't mean it literally, and I know about the BBFC etc. Maybe I didn't explain myself very well..

My point is that, certain games are rated at 18's when in reality at ages younger than that, people have developed the sense of right and wrong and no doubt Hackers son at the age of 14 knows killing people is wrong and wouldn't have any plans to go out and shoot people.

Like I said, its just a system to protect game makers and movie producers because parents who lack proper judgement may let their kid play a violent game or watch a horror movie, and then claim its 'damaged' them in some way.

In reality, a 14 year old who 'illegally' plays COD:MW2 is no more likely to go out and kill people than a 18 year old who legally does.

Thanks for all the responses, I've never let him have an 18 rated game in the past as I've felt that the rating was there for a reason much as they are for films, I've seen (although not played) games such as Grand Theft Auto and tbh I was quite astounded at the level of violence and would not have been comfortable with him playing a game like that. In saying that he has the 15/16 rated films such as Call of Duty and the first Modern Warfare and I suppose my supplemental question would be does the new game appear more violent/gruesome/gory than its predecessors.

For what it's worth, he is well rounded and very sensible and I suppose some of it is from my own hang ups - I have witnessed and dealt with extreme violence all round the world and I presume it is a natural or parental instinct to try and shield him from some of that even if it is just 'virtual' violence.

I'v been playing MWF2 for a couple of weeks now on PS3, I wasn't sure about it at first however, but the more I play it the more I get into it. I think game-play wise its more fluid and more rewarding that its predecessor.
I still think the match making system is the worst one EVER invented, If it doesn't take a good 15 mins to set up a game, it then goes and kicks one of your friends out... Also having to spend a whole game with 1 red bar connection because someones trying to play on 56k...is lets say... painful :D
It will never compete with the likes of CS 1.6 or CSS in competitive gaming because of many reasons; to much equipment... stupid STUPID perks(did i mention stupid?) imbalanced maps (to much crap scattered about etc, to many camping spots), lag issues and hit-box issues... yada yada I could go on. However, its fun to razz around on, vent some anger after a bad day :D

Did I mention its full of camping 11 year olds that feel the need to scream down the mic while there mum tells them off? - oh yea theres a lot of that ;) - make use of that mute button :D

/rant over

If anyone fancies a razz around on ps3 - feel free to PM me for my ps3 ID :)

It is no more gruesome, gory or violent than it's predecessor. There is one instance of an increase in violence and gore - when you pull the knife out of your chest to kill the baddy, and then the terrorism scene which you can skip (which in my opinion detracts from the story).

How about you play it yourself? Or are you not much of a gamer?

I can't comment as I'm not a parent and have no idea what I may do when my child is 14 and I am in the position to make a decision like this.

I played the single player right through in one sitting. 6hrs and 37minutes it took according to my stats. Pretty crap... but the multiplayer is definitely the main attraction. I spent 8 hours straight today playing online. It's fantastic. It's pretty much a CS:S killer in my view with the extra weapons and just the sheer eye candy on display when you're playing. RPGs flying everywhere, air strikes, knifes! Really really good.

Also, the Spec Ops stuff is really addictive. I actually think that has more life in it that the single player campaign mode.

They've really messed this up. It's fine if there is only a couple of you trying to get in a game but big groups are pants.

Its this faffing that made me ditch the PC in favour of consoles. Load it, play it. Simples.

Love MW2, cant stop playing it!

Absolutely. I can't stand the amount of crap you have to do before you can even play the game. Install this, that, this, that, directx, etc etc etc. Rather stick it in and go.
PC for work and chat, Xbox for games.

Foodpoison, I guess it depends on what you play. I play racing games on my PC, nothing in console land has come close to rFactor and the amount of addon cars, tracks, utilities etc. Also the rFactor physics feel way more realistic than anything in console land. Aswell as the immersion level in the game. I find I get more immersed in a game if its on PC. I find consoles just lack the ability to make you 'forget' your sitting on a sofa infront of your TV.

I would only consider getting a console for CoD, but the game is no way worth dropping £200+ on a console only then to *need* a HDTV (because lets face it, you would :P ) just for a game which I'd be bored of after a month or 2.

Installing games is far easier now than it used to be. It literally is just plonk in a disc and let it install in the background whilst you work. The only thing is, loading maps on a console does feel alot faster than a PC.

Up to level 27 now. KD ratio of 0.93... quite far off from my usual 1.7 ratio in CSS. Must try harder. We should have a TP night soon!

Have you played Forza Motorsport 3 with a decent wireless racing wheel and a racing seat?
One of my hall mates has them, brought them from home for a few days before returning them back home because they took up too much space.

7.1 surround sound headphones on, room darkened, 32" HDTV, and I could have sworn that I was driving my focus. Very surreal.

The only thing I miss from PC gaming is the vast amounts of mods and add-ons. Xbox 360 has to wait for developers to make them and then you have to buy them.

I had a KD ratio of something stupid like 2.1 on COD4, now I'm on something measly :(

Add me, Food Poison. We may be able to hit it up, but I think it's likely that I won't be able to connect, internet too rubbish.

Hope were all pc players here and no console kids :P

Hell no!

Nope, I've always wanted a go on the racing seat gear but no one I know is *that* interested in racing games. I have played Forza though, wasn't *that* impressed. It was alright but the physics of it felt wrong, not sure.. but I didn't feel like I was in a car. Maybe thats the crappy controllers fault though.

One of the guys I work with has Forza 3 and the new Dirt 2 game and both are great with the official steering wheel. Had a games night at work and we had the wheel clamped to the table. I love the feedback and the resistance you can feel coming through the wheel. Really well executed in Forza 3.

If anyone wants to add me, my gamertag is currently mbooth

Im sucking really badly at the game and need help! :p

It's an entirely different experience with a controller and a wheel.
It's like a completely different game.

I'll add you now, food poison.
