I went to the midnight opening at Gamestation in my local town, got a poster and a laser film cell thingy which is pretty cool. I was 5th in the queue, the guys on the till were pretty shocked when I asked for the PC version since everyone else wanted the Xbox 360 or PS3
My thoughts so far:
one major exclusion for me is titles and emblems unlockable by challenges I used to love playing in a certain way to enable me to unlock them - now you can still edit your 'player card' but its basically you have to buy (using the COD currency may I add) a background and buy 'layers' which are little cheesey clipart symbols like a nuclear symbol etc. and you have to buy the layer then the clipart it would have been nice to retain 'winning' emblems and titles, it was one of my favourite things about MW2 and all the cheeky titles were awsome.
The gameplay feels a bit more..umm...natural shall we say but at the moment it makes it feel a bit less flowing - BO with marathon and lightweight feels like MW2 with neither of them attached. It could just be because I'm used to WM2 and would I not feel this had I played BO straight off the bat
The maps from what I've played don't seem to be as 'classic' as MW2 at the moment, they are a bit more diverse and it's not quite immediately apparent of the point of the maps (for example in MW2 Derail and Afganistan were blatent good-for-snipering maps). I reckon this will come with time
I currently don't feel as involved in the gameplay as I did with MW2, this could just be because I was just starting to learn domination on MW2 like the back of my hand and knew every little trick and stuff and now I'm like errr, I'm playing domination but it's different :-s
I don't like create a class 2.0 at the moment. I advanced 10 levels, created one custom class based on assault rifle, bought an enfield with red dot sight, unlocked hardline, sleight of hand, second chance (last stand), semtex and flashbang and that was all my dollar gone from 16,000COD - from one class. It seems disjointed - 50 levels before prestige, I'm already level 10 (in about 2 hours with lots of messing around with controls and stuff) and I've got less than you would start with by default on MW2. I hate that you have to buy stuff tbh, I much preferred leveling for stuff because it gave you clear cut aims. Maybe I'll get used to it though
the perks seem a bit disjointed in the way they are arranged in the slots, they made good sense in MW2 but now its a bit mixed up, it gives some variety but some are out of place imo
postive aspects of the game:
the XP system is pretty good, you get XP for alot more stuff such as knifing in the back as oppose to knifing in the front
the RC buggy is awsome, the action is pretty wicked overall, there is no intermission between matches (at least not on domination) - this is a blessing and a curse though since intermission was good to switch around classes and play with unlocks and review match stats, but it does mean you can get more matches in with less delay helping the overall flow, the prone is wicked especially running to prone - you literally dive to the ground! There is alot of choice in servers and you can review which servers you want to play on instead of jumping onto a random server, that used to annoy me no end with MW2 where you'd leave a server because its full of 10th prestige campers and n00btubers and you go back in the hope of a new server and it places you back on exactly the same one
The scenery in the maps is pretty awsome, one map has gargantuan soviet machines/cranes moving in the background.
snipering is much harder imo, I've only got the druganov at the moment but quick scoping is a no go with it, makes it better for not being picked off too easily by n00bsnipers. Carepackage drops seem a bit slower but easier since there are more places to hide.
I haven't looked fully at all the challenges but there are plenty to go around, not too sure about the acessability of them, they were a central part to MW2 but they're not so obvious in BO but there seems like some good challenges like I got x number of kills overall (weapon independant) last night and got 2500XP for it.
Contracts look very interesting, some are just impossible at the moment without learning the game inside out (20 headshot kills with the sniper within 1hr) but one was something like get 20 kills with one of the SMG's within 1hr20 game play, cost COD150, reward COD500 and 500XP - well I already got 20 kills with said SMG anyway within about 20 minutes.
Visually its pretty nice, running 1920x1080p, 4x AA, 'extra' textures, full anisotropic filtering, however I'm not in shock and awe at the visuals of the multiplayer, its not a huge leap over MW2 but I'd rather it runs nice max everything than having to turn stuff down to get a smooth FPS.
Alot of people have had extreme lagging on Steam, major complaints apparently, I experienced no such issues, just a few regular latency lags but gameplay otherwise was silky smooth
overall as a standalone game its awsome and new players to the series will love it, I just can't help thinking Infinity Ward did a better job than Treyarch
