Hello and thanks for all the replies in my last post regards safety of Cobra 750AF use on a Pentax K10D. It is safe to use and it fires when I place it onto the camera. My next question having read the manual for hte K10D is how do I know that the camera is utilising the flash corectly ie that the two items are "talking" to each other. The Cobra was originally purchased for a Pentax MZ-50.

thanks for the reply but what is the difference between TTL (through the lens ) and P TTL what does the P stand for cheers

No idea of the technicalities, just that the flash will only work at full power on a P-TTL camera body .. you will have to use aperture to tone it down a bit (so to speak).

A good page HERE to read but basically from what I can see :

P-TTL works by sending a small flash pulse at much less than full power. Light bounced back to the camera from this preflash is used to compute the amount of power required for the real flash, which follows nearly instantaneously. Old-style TTL worked by measuring light reflected off of the film, or from the sensor in early Pentax models. Apparently this was problematic when used with modern sensor coatings, so this mode is no longer available in current camera bodies

Thanks for that. I have now read the pages mentioned but I am still all at sea. The Cobra 750AF has exactly the same contacts on it as the hotshoe of the Pentax k10D, and I have now purchased the manual from OTC(which is a rip off in my opinion £8.00 for a few photocopied sheets) but it does what it says and tells me the flash uses Pentax TTL.

I am sorry but I am still not sure if the camera and flash are talking. (the flash does fire when I use it on the camera.) What I would hope is can someone give me practical ideas I could use to tell if the camera and flash are in sync and talking properly.
Sorry to be a numpty. It was all so much easier when cameras where not digital.

Yes but from the K10D onwards Pentax cameras do not use TTL, they use P-TTL (Preflash TTL). As I said, maybe not clearly enough .. the camera and flash will talk to each other only in the very basic form which means the flash will ouput at full power only.

Ah right got you, sorry did not fully understand the answer,so it will talk but only as far as FIRE and thats it all the extra gizmos the camera can tell it will be ignored
