I'm looking to discover a little more of the UK coastline and have decided on either North or South Devon (done most of Cornwall already). I'm looking to combine coastal path hiking with some photography & would appreciate any feedback... which is the most impressive - North or South Devon?

thanks

Simon

I say north, but I am a bude man and I only really know the north devon/north cornwall coast.

South devon is meant to be the english riviera which says pretty but not really impressive, though I don't know the coast that well

I am south.

We could start a North / South divide here lol

Of course the best is here.

I live on the North Devon coast, it is a big hit with hikers/walkers. The coastal path runs pretty much from the very bottom of the North Devon stretch at Welcombe/Sandymouth area, right on up into lower Somerset area of Porlock and Minehead. Places like Lynmouth and Lynton, Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe/Ilfracombe are all very popular area's with some stunning views and very photographic coastal areas. Also you have to factor in Exmoor and Dartmoor are situated pretty much either side of the coasts. Dartmoor obviously being a little further down towards the Southern end. As said, the South Coast tends to be a bit more Riviera-ish (is that a word:lol:) and has a more Urban setting to it, with a few of the bigger Ports and Towns set on the South. HTH:thumbs:

Thanks for the feedback..not looking to start any "wars" here

I've done a bit of googling and as mentioned the South coast looks to be more populated and perhaps not quite as rugged as I'm looking for...last year we did several stretches of the coastal path around the Lizard / Lands End and very much enjoyed it, I'm really looking for the same sort of dramatic/wild coastline

ok hands up

both are beautiful places but yes the north would be more rugged.

It would be the north coast every time for me (fair disclosure, I'm originally from north Devon). The north side has the wild and rugged coastal elements you are looking for. Hartland Quay is one of my favourite places to watch the sun go down (especially in winter). Sandymouth is another.

Although I am South coast born 'n' bred,
the North coast is the one I'd go for.

Thanks everyone, I've had a bit more of a look around the web and the North coast is definitely looking favourite..Lynmouth is looking like a promising base

Another vote for the North Devon coast over the South. That's from an Exonian (nearer South coast than North!)

I'd say the north coast and i'm from torquay.

the south coast is beautiful and has some lovely beaches but the north is more wild and rugged.
