Yes i'm clueless when it comes to photography. I am to photography what Dougal & father Jack were to Catholisism.

So please help using words you'd use to a 4 year old.

My website is terrible. I have a beautiful old property that i let as self catering accommodation yet the photos are as clear as a Chilean miner's underpants.

So I need to buy a camera. One that will lighten up the rooms within the house + one that lets me take a wide angle or panoramic view (what's the difference?) as I have rotating banner pics that have been stretched and distorted and frankly look ridiculous.

I also don't want to spend a fortune as i'm pretty tight. A small compact camera would be good as the big cameras look all technical and someone's bound to ask me about it thus making me look even more of a complete tool.

Get someone who knows what they're doing and has the right equipment to take the photos :p
 
A 2 night stay would buy you a reasonable compact, then you still have to work out how to get the shots right.

A 5 night stay would get you a reasonable photographer that would get you the shots you require.

Invest in your business, if you cant afford to spend the money, see if you can get a trade off. More than one way to get what you need.

Ask someone if they will do some HDR internal shots for you. HDR if used effectively can really show good internal lighting.

You need to get someone to resize the banner pics to either fit the frame they rotate in, or to change the size of the frame, so they don't distort.

Pay someone to take the photo's, it will do you a world of favours in the long run, will be much better than you can take, and will increase revenue for the business.

Failing that, yo will need a decent camera and also a flashgun -it will be cheaper to pay someone to do it.
 
It's not the camera, it's knowing how to use it. Interiors can be quite tricky - a wide lens is usually essential, then you have to control converging verticals, get light into dark corners, balance flash with ambient and with bright light through the windows too. Not the easiest subject, but surely with your business in mind, worth investing some time and money in.

You could do it with any old camera really, with good manual controls - a flash or two probably essential. A decent compact would be fine for small outputs, web etc. But if you want something that would do a good job of that, and 101 other things really well, then it's a DSLR or one of those new system compacts (MILC).

Budget? Other wishes and wants?

I think the issue with the banner, is the banner rather than the images. The banner is too big and the photos have been stretched to fit. Maybe also find photographer who can do webdesign, kill 2 birds with one!
I think yourself buying a camera will just end up in a dusty camera sat on a shelf, and the website exactly the same as it is now. You wouldnt try to fit central heating if you had no idea where to begin, so why try photograph your property when you have no idea how to?

I think this sums my situation up. No point me buying something i don't know how to use only to make a right pigs ear of the job then having to employ a professional to do it anyway.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll do the decent thing and get the pics done professionally while claiming to all who ask that i took them myself...:wave:
