Thanks for the comment Darren, i cropped the shot a bit and took out some of the overhanging rock at the bottom as it was casting a huge shadow, otherwise this would have shown a bit more scale. Id love a longer lens or maybe a tele converter but i dont take many long shots and cant justify the cost just to take good moon shots (or can i?:D)

Love the moon shot. Yes, very distant and significantly better than any moon shot I have ever done. I really like it slap bang in the middle of the photo.

Tanks Jenny, I'm sure i had a shot with the focus on the distance but i cant find it on the card, it would be more apt wouldn't it.:)

thanks John, my focal length is not in the same league as yours:lol: but im pleased with what i have achieved with it. Im now off to google Clavius, Copernicus and Plato with interest.
 
I like your Stanage edge shot but it needs something more I feel. The lack of front to back sharpness detracts from it in my eyes. I love the foreground interest but there is no real focal point beyond that to draw the viewer into the distance.

The moon shot is a far stronger image for me :thumbs: I have no idea at all what John is talking about but I do think it's a cracking shot:lol:. Far better than I've ever achieved. I assume you live somewhere out in the sticks without much light polution?

thanks Andy, actually this was taken in my backyard in Sheffield, im not sure light pollution comes into play at 1/50.
 
:D... I do tend to "cheat" using telescopes of course

Light pollution is only an issue for Deep sky stuff Andy (that's when the specialist filters come into play)... the moon and planets, the exposures are way too short to be a problem.
 
Console works very well - I like the repeating patterns and all the black that makes the colours stand out so well. Nicely composed, too.

Distant - I like the colours and textures in the first one but I am distracted by something funny going on at the left hand edge of the foreground rock. It looks as if it is pasted in or something - may be just my monitor.

The moon has come out well - you have got plenty of detail and the exposure is spot on.
 
Week 42 Secret

Im a bit late this week, my initial idea didn't get off the ground due to time and energy so i thought i would wait for my Niece and Nephew coming over this week. This is just a snap shot really, i didn't want to get all the gear out in the park for fear of being lynched by the mob:bat:

i fancied a high contrast low saturated look for this and im reasonably happy with the result.

This is pretty good - I like the concept and composition, while the processing enhances the sense of mystery. I find the background highlight between their heads very distracting, though, even if it is meant to represent the secret thought.
 
And there was me looking for the offensive background before I read down a bit :)

Snapshot or not, I like the processing on this. Composition wise I'm torn about the space on the right, but otherwise the pose works perfectly :)

I'm not sure if I'd prefer to see there faces though :shrug:

You should not be afraid of taking photos in public. The small minded idiots have won when that happens. Having said that, I've never been approached and questioned as to my motives. Perhaps if it ever happened then I'd be more worried in future. When I take my kids to the park it is normally for a photo session and I take all my gear. I've even taped a tripod and camera to a roundabout before now :eek:

Cheers Andy, i have a couple of their faces but they are both peeping at the camera so it doesn't look right. As soon as the camera comes out they both put on really false poses :lol:

Week 43 Urban

A week late but last week the weather was poor so i missed the chance to get out to do what i wanted. Its a bit hectic in my house at the moment in preparation for my second knee operation of the year but i finally managed to get into the centre of Sheffield today.

Sheffield is trying to sort itself out despite the financial crisis and there has been a lot of positive changes in the centre. Here are two shots which reflect the old and the new.

Week 44 Train

I thought i would grab a shot of this line, i pass over it frequently as it dissects the woods that i walk my dog through. The line it self is a goods line and only used mon - fri and probably only twice a day so there was little danger of being flattened while composing the shot:lol:

This is going to be my last entry for a while. Im having the second stage of my ACL reconstruction on my knee on Thursday. Its going to put me out of action for sometime as im off work for three months. Hopefully i may be able to do some themes if they are achievable indoors and without too much set up. I may catch up at some point or just complete the remaining weeks in next years 52. As ill be sat around twiddling my thumbs i shall continue to pass comment on other threads.

I like your urban degeneration photograph Chris, I am certainly a fan of the PP too, it really adds feel to the image. A bit cheeky of me but care to share the processing? Its a look I am really keen on achieving. I like the colour tones in the image too and am curious as to the graffiti on the wall behind the post/light switch. do you have one where you have taken a step to the left to bring that graffiti into view?
I also like your train photograph, again the PP really works and adds to what is a simple object. I like the perspective and composition you have taken, the viewers eye is lead into and through the image.

Thanks Iain, the urbex shot is actually a 5 shot HDR which brings out some of the textures in the decay, i have de saturated some of the channels in the shot too. I finished it off with a high pass filter to sharpen it. Im just deciding if i have overdone the HDR a little and have been messing with the original to see if that is better. I m putting a few more up on my flicker which show a bit more of the graffiti.
 
Hope all goes well with the knee and you are on your feet again soon. I really like the really low angle you got on the rail. Looks like you were lying down !
 
Hi Chris, hope all goes well with your knee operation.

I am in catch-up mode - been a bit busy.

Secret - love it. Excellent take on the theme and I think it works very well not seeing their faces (even more secret).

Urban - degeneration, I like this shot but keep feeling that I want to see the graffiti in focus rather than the bits in front.

Regeneration - very nice. I love the lines but it is one of those photos that I want to straighten even though it does not need straightening!

Trains - I love this one. The low vantage point really makes it and I was very relieved to hear that the lines are not used very often! Great take on the theme :thumbs:

Urban degeneration and Trains are both very strong images. The graphic effect of the regeneration is good, but it doesn't grab my attention like the other two!

I'm going to miss popping into your 52, but I hope that we'll still see you around the forum.

Train : I love this. I thought I'd managed to get close to the tracks this week, but you've certainly beaten me to it.
Good DoF, good colours and contrast and the simplicity works well.

Urban : It's a struggle for me to choose between degeneration and regeneration here. Two very, very different shots and I like them both equally. The HDR's worked brilliantly on the textures in the first and given it a slightly menacing air . . . but I love the strong lines and geometric feel of the second.

Secret : Concept and execution are both spot on. Love the dark, contrasty processing - it gives a far more mysterious and slightly spooky feel than a lighter, brighter PP would have.
I really want to know what she's telling him.

Distant : The landscape is rugged with a good feel of open space, but it's the moon shot that does it for me.
I know this has been done a million times before, but it's something I never tire of looking at. Beautifully crisp and loads of really nice detail in there :thumbs:
 
I like both your urban shots - they work well together contrasting two kinds of urban views. I particularly like the composition of the second one - it almost gives me vertigo!

I love Autumn rails - good colours and strong composition, with the iron diagonal powering through the natural background. Of course you should ahve called it 'leaves on the line'. :lol:

I hope the op goes well - it doesn't sound very nice to me :shake: but if it sorts you out then it will be worth it. I don't suppose you have much choice - we'll be thinking of you.
 
Both images work well for Urban Chris, but I'm drawn to the dirty, grungey look of the first one... A much more interesting image.

Train, An excellent idea and it works very well... How did you find a rail you could get that close too...

Thanks for all the well wishes, its gone pretty well but it all starts here with the recovery. This weeks theme is "share" and earlier today my right hamstring shared a piece of muscle to graft into my left knee (ligament replacement) I may take a picture of it and post it once the dressings are off if i can manage it.
 
Catching up again Chris:

Urban: I like the degeneration shot. Lovely DOF, very good focus and lots to keep you interested in.

Train: A lovely shot. Again nice focus and DOF and I like all the browns.

Hope all goes well with the knee surgery and that you can get some shots in over the next few weeks.
