Cloudy lens

I've just found an old m42 135mm lens, When I use it things looks a little cloudy. pictures look out of contrast a little grainy. Does it just need cleaning or is it something more serious, or is it just my bieng a newbe.

I've had some good results with this lens apart from the cloudy grainyness. Any help much appreciated.
 
Not sure how to post a pic. I just gave it a quick wipe took a picture of the cat and it seems better now. I will buy some lens cleaning wipes in the morning and give it a good clean.
 
Oh right - I'd assumed you'd already wiped the front and rear elements, and that the muck was inside it. If a quick wipe has sorted it out - happy days! :)
