As always the case it's vital to have more than one backup solution in place. I was always amazed at how many people used Flickr to store their photos.

Learnt my lesson a few years back lost almost two years worth of photographs when the hard drive crashed and was unable to retrieve all my images.

all my photos are on 3 additional internal hard drives and one extrnl hard drive and a lot of older oned on CD/DVD

The other rumour regarding this story is that Canon suffered a ransomware attack and Canon refuse to pay the hackers to unencrypt the data

I learned a long time ago never to underestimate the stupidity of programmers......but that actually sounds more likely.

Programming bug, often known as working as coded.........

Photos (and some other stuff) too precious to lose. Always have at least one backup, preferably a minimum of two and always assume that any storage - whether local hard drive or cloud will fail at some point. Even stuff backed up on CD's/DVD’s may degrade over time.
I have stuff on local iMac, external hard drive x2, external time machine and whole of main HDD Backed up in cloud via Backblaze. Oh, and I use Flickr...
I think the issue with cloud, on the OP's point, is that cloud companies seem to come and go with alarming frequency and bees no guarantee a “takeover” will mean a similar level of service. I certainly wouldn’t trust any master files to a cloud solution alone.
