So I am going to make sure I get out this winter with the Cam as much as possible. Now I live in T-Shirts and Jeans. So need to get some warm kits.

What do you lot suggest? And what suppliers? I guess something waterproof, from laying down in the frosty ground, and something thermal to keep me warm.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Paramo clothing and a close cell camping matt!
The first will cost a lot, the second will not!!
OR you could try Buffalo gear.

Try HERE

Layers my friend, long sleeved t-shirt, sweatshirt then fleece and then waterproofs. And a thick woolley hat, preferably covering the ears, always gets mine the cold. Feet are a big problem on really cold days. Ideally you want to buy a good pair of hiking boots, waterproof and a size bigger than what you normaly take, thin thermal socks and then a pair of walking socks. If your laying on the ground you can buy microwavable warm packs that last a few hours from survival shops, and a couple of camping mats.

padded gilets are awesome and warm on top of jumpers, £10 at asda :)

I have a www.jackpyke.co.uk hunter jacket & trousers - waterproof, windproof & damned warm . look for a local supplier, I got the full outfit for less than £100

A good North Face jacket should do the job, I think they do some thin gloves too that you can still control the camera through, not sure what they're called though.

I agree -layers is the answer coupled with the right gear.If you have a branch of somewhere like Blacks or Go Outdoors near you, it's well worth a visit to see the vast range of kit that's available

Wellies are a must for streams/rivers, Lidl had an offer on chest high waders so got some of them, which get me places i couldnt with just wellies

agreed, then look online to find it cheaper to not pay rip off prices

lidl's have got ski stuff next week, have used the jackets/trousers in swiss loads of times. nice and warm

I was in lidl this morning and they had a load of sports thermal underclothing. Looked reasonable enough (I was there for the lego and aubergines)

Something waterproof, good boots and lots of layers. Unless you're planning on spending hours on top of Ben More in January I doubt you'll need anything fancy.

:D clothes old chap...thought you were talking about washing the car

i wear walking stuff all the time...really thin wickable layers
the first layer is the most important a sort of second skin which traps heat
it is wise however to keep moving

GoOutdoors IS online as well as a shop!!

Yes, but there discounted member prices are every where else's normal prices, so you are just giving them a fiver for the privilage of the same price. They are useful for trying on stuff or if you want something in a hurry, a bit like PCWorld.

Make sure you keep your feet warm and dry. A couple of people I know do slope soaring in the bitter cold and they rate the Maplin feet warmers of all things!

Get a good base layer for a kick off, then layers on top of that, you can always take them off if to warm.Always wear a hat, a lot of heat escapes from your head, good socks and boots and decent gloves. A windproof top layer will keep the heat in more than a fleece type thing. Try and take a hot drink in a flask with you and summat to eat.

Thanks all some good info. Will go hunting and see what I can find :)

+1 for the buffalo jacket, mine kept me warm in -40 (inc windchill) in Bosnia, so colder than anywhere in UK!
alos another vote for if getting on the ground, the roll mat- I carry mine in my range bag so i f I have to sit down on the deck for more than 5 mins it comes out, makes a massive difference. mine is an issue thermarest type (it self inflates) about 2cm thick.

Good boots are essential too (or at least decent socks)
without wishing to sound patronising, if you spend most of your life indoors then it will hit you harder.

Good luck ( pack a flask)

Arcteryx is the only way to go - layer it and you'll be laughing. Even on the coldest days last year I was toasty warm in nothing but a closed cell base layer and my softshell.

Feet - good boots (Salomons are comfy) but more importantly decent socks - smartwool are tops.

I have Craghopper lined Kiwis (trousers) that are pretty warm, and with long-johns they're toasty as. I have a north face jacket with hood and removable fleece liner, again with a long sleeve thermal underneath it's lvely and warm. As mentioned, boots are very important, with good, decent socks. I can reccomend 1000mile socks highly.

As a cheap alternative, look in your local surplus store for an 'arctic parka'
I didnt think of it until I just took the dog for a walk and put mine on.
They used to be army issue but went out of the system ages ago,
DPM (obviously) thick material (not waterproof but good anyway) with a quilted liner, they are toasty, come to the knees with a wired hood. perfect for sitting about doing landscapes or waiting for that elusive stag.

Some cool stuff, and I am liking the pricing.

Have to work out sizes, and will place an order some some bits.

Cheers

Please mention Talk Photography if you order anything............

Paramo stuff is expensive but see if you can get to one of their "roadshows". They have all sorts of gear at 30% off, plus slight seconds.

Last sunday I got a £225 waterproof for £125!

I don't know how they advertise these events though. I only heard about it by chance and it didn't seem to be advertised anywhere locally, or on their website.
