Close up questions?????????????

I'm trying to do some close up work but I can't achieve the effect I'm after. I want a wide angle and my widest lens is 18-70. It gives me the look I want but won't focus because it's too close and the min focusing distance is 38cm. Will close up lenses allow me to focus without affecting the focal length or not? If not the nearest thing I can find is a sigma 24mm which almost gives the effect I'm after but I can't find out if it will focus close enough.

Any ideas you good people?

Take the lens off the camera? Even a short spacer ring will make the focus much closer. You can hold it close to the body and just look to see the effect.

Can't getthe aperture blades to stay open when I take the lens off and it doesn't let enough light through to make out what I'm pointing at.
