hi guys, i am sorry i know i havent been on the forum for long and yet i am picking brains already! but i am severely lacking in a decent upclose lens for spontanious people and getting faces, that sort of thing. something you could get a bird with from a way away would be good...

i just dont have a CLUE what to look for, at the moment i use a 50 -200mm Pentax lens but i want something i can get in peoples faces with, without being too close to them

can anyone help??

You want a longer focal length then.

Unfortunately there aren't as many options for Pentax users as there are for Canon and Nikon users. The Pentax web site lists the following options with focal lengths longer than 200mm:
* smc DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3
* smc DA 55-300mm f/4.0-5.8 ED
* smc DA 300mm f/4.0 ED (IF) SDM

Unfortunately I don't know anything about them. Hopefully someone will be along soon who can help you a bit more.

there are many many more options fortunately - have been looking at the Sigma 170-500mm which i believe has had great reviews.

there is a 50 - 500 but i have heard its pretty bad to have such alot of focal length in one lens. can reduce quality and of course the lens will be slower most of the time.

so what do you guys reckon... would i be best off jacking in my 50 - 200mm and just getting the big un. or do you reckon i should make do with my 50-200 and buy the 170-500???

i am far more considering the latter, but it would be good to know what people think

Thanks Dino, thats a great site although unfortunately they dont review the 170-500... have heard good things about it from other places though!

cheers xx

Perhaps you should try a 2nd-hand 500mm mirror lens, decide if you like that sort of reach and can <cough> hand-hold it, then re-sell it?
