What are the screw on Close up lens screen on filters like as jessops tried to talk to me into one today for my 17 - 40 L. I guess it wont be that good with taking macros?

Or would it of been better getting one for my 50mm prime? a close up screen on lens that goes on end of lens

What about a proper macro lens?
 
That what i though i think it cos they did not have the macro lens i wanted so tried to sell me something else.

He did also try to sell me a Canon 60mm Macro Lens but though it wont be long enough?

60mm may not be long enough for insects as you'll have to get very close to them which may scare them off. Plus there is more chance of getting your own shadow in the way of your light. A longer macro will let you focus as close but from standing further back so that would be better for insects I think :)
