I'd leave it as it is now. I think the impact of losing an hour of sleep in March is minimal at the most.

I really like the change in day length over the year; its a driver for other interesting changes.

Sometimes I really wonder how great Britain got where it is today? Flipping heck mate, too dark for commuting and keep the roads clear. What are we? Unbelievable, now if we had bad weather like some of the Nordic countries but even then they manage just fine. Have a little faith in our capabilities please.

I have plenty of faith in the majority of people in the UK :) I'm just pointing out that if the country went to GMT+1 all the time, that during December it would still be dark at 8am when the roads are at their busiest. At the same time, kids who aren't driven to school are either walking there (or in our case walking half a mile along a busy road to the bus stop). Combine this with some black ice or snow on the roads and the numpties who only partially clear the frost or snow from their car windows then there is an increased risk of accidents. Agreed the Nordic countries handle these things better (I've worked there during winter), but you have to remember that they have mandatory winter tyres, and are guaranteed poor road conditions for much of the winter. This means the population in general are much better prepared than many drivers in the UK.

I've got some friends who live in Western Australia, and the state voted to abolish daylight saving around 2009/2010. One of the many arguments for abolishing daylight saving was that it caused curtains to fade faster, as they were closed for longer periods when the sun was out :D As a result, on the nice summer evenings, they now lose an hour of useful daylight every evening as it starts getting dark around 8pm (also when the mosquitoes start coming out). With the majority of workers not getting home until 6pm or later, it leaves less time to enjoy time outside with family and friends, playing sports etc.

I think keeping gmt wintertime is of benefit, but not sure why it start 2 months before solstice and extends 3 months after. I think it should end last Sunday in February, I have had quite enough by then.
