weekly Clives TP 52 Week 52: Celebrate

Miniature - fits the theme as others have said shame about the background maybe a tighter crop?

I like this a lot Clive. It fits the theme very well and having had a few afternoons getting my son to ride as fast as he can on his bike down a hill, so I can go for blurred movement shots, I know it's not always easy to capture what you were looking for! I like the composition - it looks as though he's bounded right down the hill in his joy. And I like the way that his face is much clearer than the rest of his body so we can see the big smile :)

Capture - nicely train and a good interpretation, he's certainly looks happy. The only thing for me is I would like the face a bit sharper and to stand out a bit more. Maybe underexposed get the background and using off camera flash to both freeze the motion on his face and make him stand out. Obviously this is very much dependant on equipment. However a great start none the less (y)

I like it, conveys the theme to me, needs a bit of brightness thats all,

"nicely train" indeed

Interesting take on the theme Clive, it fits well

Well done on freezing the face and hands (y) I'm not so keen on the composition and wonder whether cropping it to portrait format might look better?

Well that will do perfectly for Happy Clive. Nice movement blur.

Clive ... don't know how you did this but it's first rate. :woot:

That's a great happy photo (y) might benefit from some cropping though

Burst shot panning as he ran past and that was the result, fun to do too. The idea was to leave a feeling of movement in the shot but catch the face, with a few more attempts i might have nailed it, but it was very cold with a freezing wind coming off the sea so we went back to hot coffees!

I am still treating this as 52 weeks of free Photography lessons
Me too

Plenty of life left in that :-)

Great find & fits the bill.

A nice set of images Clive, I'm on a bit of a catchup so apologies for the short critique, however:

Abandoned - An excellent choice and totally on theme. For my eye though it looks a little too saturated, although that could be down to the strong sunlight. The only other thing is to have a look around the frame for distractions, general rule for me is "if it doesn't add, take it out", by this I am referring to the bottom left of the shot. personally I would crop out the wood, the other thing that is floating next to it and the shadow. As to the top of the frame, A shallower depth of field (smaller f-number) would help to throw this out of focus, so that it doesn't draw the eye too much.

Happy - A great shot and I really like the idea and in the main the execution. The only thing for me is that I would like the face to be a bit more prominent. possibly by underexposing the background a tad and using the flash to make him stand out. (y)

Hi Clive
Happy - I agree a few more attempts at the panning would have helped. Capturing a sharp shot when the movement is in two planes is very difficult. That issue is what makes panning for race cars fairly straightforward, but much harder with rally cars.
Abandoned - (y) Kudos for joining me in shooting sunken boats, I think they make a great subject. Chris makes a good point about the post? at the bottom of the image, but cropping to remove it would probably have changed the composition too much.

Very nice Clive, I like sunken boats too, and this is a pretty one with the sun on her.

Yes there is that bit bottom left, but I'd try to clone it out instead of cropping it.

Also the top ... I'd remove the top 15-20%, the river bank and all that clutter. Keeping it simple. :D

Hi Clive,

I like the second re-shoot for metal. I like the row of them and the different angle.
The grave captive shot is a cracker for me. A clever interpretation of the theme.
I like the thought behind miniature but I have to agree with Andy regarding the BG. Maybe a slightly different composition?
Happy - great shot and well executed. Maybe boost the dark end a bit or raise the exposure to brighten him up a tad as others have said.
Abandoned is a good shot. Nicely lit.

Abandoned, I'd have gone in closer to removed the BG or pulled out to include more; however, well spotted and nice detail/textures on the boat.

Might work well as a gritty B&W.

Cheers.

Abandoned - I like it, I agree about the closer crop as the brighter parts of the hull of the boat at the top of the image fight for your attention.

A new bottom in it and it'll be as good as new......

Hi, a small catch up for me;

Happy - Nice idea and definitely says happy. As other's have said it could be a bit sharper but on a cold day I don't blame you at all for letting the hot drinks win :)

Abandoned - Nice golden sun on the boat, agree with cropping a bit off the top to take some of the distractions away.

Hi, certainly abandoned just needs a better composition, i would crop out some of the top

Hi Clive, great spot for Abandoned. The only thing I think this needs is a slightly different shooting angle - if you'd tackled the boat from more of an angle (so it wasn't quite as flat on in the frame) I think you'd have ended up with a stronger composition - with or without cropping etc. Our eyes tend to like being drawn around and across images, whereas when something's shot flat on, your gaze just gets stuck and doesn't quite know which way to go.

Just a suggestion, but otherwise you've nailed the theme :)

Happy - perfect, just theright amount of blur which gives a geat sense of jumping for joy.

Abandoned - nice shot, maybe a little crop or clone at the bottom, would be interesting to see this in a contrasty B&W

The abandon boat is a great shot Clive and fits the brief perfectly. Lots of detail and texture and is just begging for a mono conversion

Like the sunken boat Clive - looks as if it's been there a while. Lovely colours, especially that vibrant green.

Abandoned is certainly on theme anyway, Clive! As has been said really. I like the subject and shot but would have been tempted to shoot from lower down and with a shallower DoF. Brings the boat to the front of the shot and would fill more of the frame whilst removing a distraction or two.

Ps love a good sunken boat :)

Thanks Ian, couldnt get lower, I was on a jetty, I would like to have been there at low tide but short of time, and possibly light! I may try it again soon. Cheers

That explains it! I thought there must have been something restricting you. Like you, I don't think I'd have been dangling my camera anywhere near the water either!

Hi Clive, ChrisHeathcote said it all for me as I'd already had a bit of a play around with the composition before reading what the others had said. Great subject and just needs a couple of tweaks (y)
