CLICK THE SHUTTER OR WALK AWAY?

A very famous image from near a concentration camp in Belsen, Germany:

BergenBelsen-boy.GIF

.

In the stand of trees immediately behind the little boy now stands Germany's main 'Denkmal' or memorial to the Victims of the Holocaust at Bergen-Belsen.
Our camp at Bergen-Hohne is about 2km further along this road (now paved, obviously).

Totally off-topic, this particular bend is now exactly the right curve and camber enabling it to be negotiated at upwards of 75mph...which is nice...

The one that got to me is the one with 3 children.. :(
I've been on a training course in work and a video of a man being electrocuted on top of a train in India. which also made me feel sick..

I help train people in the dangers of electricity and we use this video to ram home how dangerous it really can be. It's distrurbing but these events need to be recorded to help show how serious they are.

I wonder if, had the OP just written a description of the photos rather than posting a link to them, there would be in excess of 120 posts on this thread. I doubt it.

It is said that seeing is believing. When you are young and just pass your driving test it is drummed into you the dangers of driving at excess speed. You read about it in the news etc. It is only when you see someone killed yourself or it happens to someone you know does it start to sink in that you are not indestructible.

If words were more powerful than images the advertising world would not use pictures.

I've got to concur with that, i think you make a strong point.

I've seen death first hand, but i've gone the opposite way to most people. Since then i've become even more sensitive to images of death and reading stories in the paper quite often makes me upset. So maybe im building a buffer from the realities of life because i've got grief issues? I guess thats my own emotional disposition, im probably on an extreme end of the scale when it comes to that stuff. I still clicked the link though, why?, curiosity?, a primeval instinct to learn and be informed?

All i hope is that this kind of thing is done with respect and good judgment.
If pictures are needed to get across things that are happening in this world then i just hope that its done with taste.

So i'd like to re-state my view as being this;
Is it nessary?.....yes, do i wish it wasn't necessary, yes.

Wow, discussions on the internet can be productive, well done all.

As I think Joe said earlier, I'd help first if immediate help was required. In the case in question, there was nothing that could be done but record the sorry event. That said, one of the most iconic photographs of human suffering was the 1972 shot of the young Vietnamese girl running away from a Napalm attack where the journalist clearly clicked first. He was also the person who drove her (and others) to the hospital. Was he wrong given the impact that had on people's perception of the war?
