Cleaning up with Newspaper

Doesn't surprise me TBH, I guess thats why everything now has a coat of varnish, I mean lacquer, to protect the paint, until that starts to peel of course. ;)

Well I have yet to use a brillo pad on my car, and so far no swirls :thumbs:

Car enthusiasts everywhere are cringing at the contents of this thread. That said I once tried some Anti Scratch lacquer and wished I hadn't, as when I needed to correct it I couldn't, it was so hard! Sanding it off again was even worse! That'll survive Newspaper.

On the flip side I used to Ready to Spray Lacquer on my Dad's car, that reacted with the insects that got splattered all over the front and now looks awful!
 
Obvious answer is to drive a proper LandRover (Series or 90/110/Defender). Look far better with a top coat of mud and look wrong when clean and shiny!

I am not a car enthusiast, absolutely no interest in cars whatsoever :)

Does anyone actually get their car steam cleaned, or is that what they refer to as simply jet washing with high pressure machine?

My old Audi Quattro has industructable paint, I can do almost anything to it and it will look good. Heck with my dad we used to go to a stream and fill the buckets of water from that and wash the car there.

Those days are over if you have a newer vehicle. I don't like detailing, can't see the point as it is just a car and my time is more valuable. However with simple steps that don't take any longer you can really avoid swirl and scratch hell on a vehicle.

i think some regulation decided that paints manufacturers must reduce there solvent level by 80% so a lot of paint is now water based which is a lot softer then the previous solvent based 2 pack which was a popular choice for cars at one time
the exception being ceramic based paints i believe the german manufacturers are using on their vehicles which is a very hard paint, most other car makers are using water based

I've never heard of a car being washed by steam cleaning, but it is common for engine bays on show cars.
 
But would a car enthusiast leave a car out in all weather? They would probably keep it in a temperature controlled garage , and kiss it goodnight every evening lol

You can still be a car enthusiast, use it in all weathers, not have a garage, and take care of the car.

Lol you seem to "wash" you car more than car enthusiasts :) perhaps prepare it properly and you'll have to wash it less often :thumbs:

Many years ago, I knew a panel beater ( yes they really did exist ;) ) sprayer,
he'd cover his car in grease for the winter ( obviously not the windows :D ) and steam it off in the spring.

As to whether or not it worked I don't know. but that was his yearly routine

It is what I did with my Uzi ;) on the car I just use paint sealants and wax products. Dirt just falls off, and water beads easily 9-12 months later when I do it again. Just a quick wash in between. No paper no scouters no polishing etc.

Well that too, there is no other way to use it. Perhaps throw it to improve its accuracy :)

It gets splashed by passing cars etc, covered in leaves dust etc :)

Actually I did use one a few years ago, through a particularly hard winter, to save scraping the ice off the windows first thing.
But that was just and Argoose special :D

Whatever you do, don't use the Daily Mail and Express for wiping windows and car bodies with, as you'd only be smearing s**t all over.

Yes! Although I don't look out of the side windows - people should make way for me so I don't need to! More seriously, after about 30s with the defrost button pressed, all the windows are pretty much clear on all but the frostiest of mornings. Which reminds me to switch the auto wipers off before the frosts start...

Actually at the time it was a Mondeo Ghia X estate so front and rear were taken care of as was the arse (warmer)
But that still left an acre of glass to be scraped, as I said it was during one particularly harsh winter and one thing I am OCD about is having all my windows and mirrors clear before driving off.

Not like these "port hole" drivers you see!
 
Remember reading an article many years ago, an interview with David Soul on Starsky and Hutch. David said he did not like Starsky's car, as it was so nice and clean and it was always getting cleaned and polished. He said the Director / producer can't remember which one, gave David a car for his role as Hutch. But David said the car was too clean and nice, and Hutch would never have a car like that. So the Director / producer said why what sort of car would Hutch drive, David said give me a hammer and I will show you.

David Soul said he kicked the panels in and said there, that is the kind of car Hutch would drive.

And that is how Hutch's battered car with the lived in used look came about. David Soul does seem a sensible chap, when it comes to cars :rolleyes:
 
Me too. Even the tiny ones behind the wind down ones in the back door. Got a mini squeegee in each car to do the mirrors too.
 
First bit of snow here last night & it was well below freezing.

Time to top the washer bottle up with a good - screen wash (y)
 
Husband picked up his new car today. Brand new and shiny white. Got it home. A lovely brown fading into white now :lol:
 
Haha well it did snow this morning. About a cm :lol:
 
I also hate the icy weather when they start to Grit the roads, or rather salt the roads. Not that I am too bothered about a filthy car, just you hand get filthy with opening the doors and boot :punch:
