Hey all,

What is the best way to clean the lens, and what materials are going to be best to use (I take it a Brillo pad is against the rules here :))

Cheers

Lenspen and a proper microfiber cloth - not the silky tissue-thin type you get as a freebie with your spectacles.
The blue ribbed type used by cleaning staff for glass/mirrors.
You'll find it on ebay easily enough.

I use a Lenspen soft brush to clear the larger particles, followed by a blow from a Rocket Blower and then a good microfibre cloth to polish up. I also use a Lenspen lens cleaning pen if it's got really bad but I've only needed to use that a couple of times when I've been near the beach. Then to finish it's usually a good wipe over all the body with a different cloth and a blow out of the button areas.

Hi, I use as above Lens Pen, Blower, Cloth but I also take another clean cloth and spray a VERY SMALL amount of WD 40 on it (The Cloth not the lens) and rub it over the lens body also do this with my camera bodies and always leave at least over night to dry in.

Just watched the you tube link, god I didn't know you washed them under a tap?? It looks wrong!! Don't think I will do mine like tat lol

I blow the dust off with a rocket blower then use a boots spectacle cleaning kit. Cheap as chips, won't damage your lens and gts all the gunk off.

  • Always use a blower before touching a lens with anything. A tiny bit of grit, scraped across the front element by a lenspen or a cloth can gouge a canyon in the lens coatings.
  • Don't spend a fortune on expensive cleaning solutions, they're all water + isoPropanol. The former comes free from the local council, the latter can be had for a fiver from Amazon. Add the two 1:1 and save a fortune.

Thanks guys...just bought a rocket blower and Hama pen. Let's see how we get on with those.

I use a rocket blower, Lidl's W5 spectacle wipes and Hama optic paper. ;)
Those wipes are in individual sachets and are ideal to keep in your kit bag.

As with the previous posts, a blower to remove what you can and either a lenspen or an optical micro cloth (the ones you get from opticians for cleaning glasses)

Well this certainly answers my question in terms of cleaning lenses!

I'm going to look at getting a rocket blower and a decent cloth.

Just wondering, with regards to the lens pens, would people recommend buying the genuine one or will one of the cheap £1.79 imitation ones do the trick?

Thanks in advance guys,

Hi Josh

I presume you mean a cheap make - personally I'd opt for a decent one.

With regards to the cloth, I use the one that came with my wife's glasses :whistling: Just pop to a local opticians and they'll have them in at a very good price...

Hi Andy,

Yeah I did see those ones but had my suspicions about them lol! Thanks, I'll look into getting one of the genuine ones then! I dont suppose you've any idea of the difference between them would you - in terms of 'nsp1' and lsp1 or something like that? Haha!

Ah! I thought they might be a good enough cloth, I'll have to see if the girlfriend has any 'spare' ones lying around too haha :P
