As the title suggests what do you all use to clean grubby chrome camera bodies. I have tended to use small amounts of lighter fuel on the chrome part being very careful not to let it get into the mechanics. I have a nice but grubby Nikkormat that is proving a bit more of a challenge to clean up! I'd love to hear how others clean their grubby acquisitions!

Cheers Nick, I hadn't thought of an auto product, I will secure some and give it a go.

Take a great deal of care. It's very abrasive.
Gets it soooper shiny though..

^^^WHS^^^ it does need to be used sparingly, gently and with extra care.

All I ever used on my old and beloved Pentax ME Super was a minute amount of WD40. Never buffed it off as I specialized in seascapes back in those days, so protection was vital.

Baby wipes, then buff up with a dry cloth, gets most marks off bodywork. Would be very wary of lubricants, WD40 etc, personally.

At one time I used to clean many second hand cameras to sell.
On many of them the chrome is both thin and soft and a normal chrome cleaner will soon cut it away.

I found the best was a dab of white spirit and a dab of water on the same piece of cloth to moisten not wet it. It will lift water soluble and grease in one go, and only needs a quick rub with a dry cloth to finish. Difficult bits can be reached with a cotton bud damped with the same mix.

I've used a very small amount of toothpaste on an old toothbrush on a few old Russian rangefinders with good results , not as abrasive is autosol but does a good job on the more stubborn areas of man fat :puke:

Well if the chrome and rest of the camera is just grubby? I use silicon dashboard cleaner with cotton buds.....just don't get it on the lens glass as it can cause a smear when trying to wipe off. And it also gives a nice smell to your camera.

Silvo? Less abrasive than many of the metal polishes but quite effective.
