any recommendations about what to use for cleaning camera lens?

after a weekend away shooting at the coast I have returned home to find them looking distincly murky (probably the salt in the air) I usually just clean them using a soft cloth but was wondering if anyone had recommendations re cleaning solutions etc

Hi

Use a very soft lens cleaning brush to remove any debris that may scratch the lens, then I use an optical lens solution to clean them - same as opticians use for glasses

I always give mine a good blow with a rocket blower first.

Get yourself a lenspen or 2! But make sure you blow / brush any debris off before you clean

Are you asking about cleaning the lens or front element, I assume that you can simply wipe that as it would have had a UV filter to protect it against salt.

This might help

never used a UV filter for my seascape shots and that got covered in salt spray. Clean as a whisltle after a good going over with a lenspen and microfibre cloth.

I use UV filters by the coast, sooner clean a £70 filter with cloth than a £1000 lens.
No matter how carefully you clean it there is a chance of damage if salt has been on it .

opticians cloths or fluid and microfiber cloth......

I had a 10 stop on most of the time. That cleaned up spotless too.

Dampen a kitchen roll sheet with meths and wipe it over and wipe off with a clean sheet. Its cheap and works.

Juan Sheet is plenty.

Hope this is a joke?
Personally I would never use any paper product on any part of a camera let alone the front element, rolled up paper is good for cleaning glass because it is abrasive.

If you read the OP post properly it is talking about lenses not the camera and its the lens that is what I am referring to. Also I emphasised a "dampened" paper kitchen towel not a dry one.

Still everyone has their own methods and what works for them

thanks for the advice yes I was talking about the lens not the sensor ( personaly I have that cleaned professionally) and yes i do use a UV filter to protect the main glass

I wil have a look at a lenspen and take a visit to my local opticians cheers

As mentioned by garryknight, get yourself some ROR and a micro-fibre cloth. I got my Residual Oil Remover the other day for a fiver off ebay and just one drop does the trick

Surely most lens-cleaning solutions are designed to remove grease (eg finger marks)? If so, they will be so-called 'organic' solvents.

Salt is more hydrophilic (water-bonding) than olyphilic (oil-bonding) - salt dissolves better in water than in oil! So a water-based solvent is ideal - luckily one can get plenty for cheap: from a tap.

You don't want to rub the filter whilst there are still salt crystals present as you may get scratches. Why not remove the filter from the lens, wash it (the filter!) under warm running water to dissolve the salt, and then leave to dry. Remove any residual streaks using a microfibre cloth (you want something non-abrasive and lint free).

I use a Lenspen. Works great on any dust or finger marks.

You're better off with isopropyl alcohol as there are additives in meths which may leave a residue.
