Hi Guys,

Quick question, not sure where to put it, so thought this would be best place.

I'm waiting the 60 days before I can look at the Classifieds which is a bit of a ball ache.

I have a friend on here which I have known for ages and know personally. Is it possible for him to vouch for me?

Would be a good feature if not, as I am real and not a con-artist lol and 60 days is ages.

Thats not what he asked :) . he wants to know if a regular who vouches for him can prove he isnt a trader and thus bypass the 60 day rule ....Its also a suggestion that such an option be added to TP .... hmm not keen on the idea myself... but...

Yeah I didn't know if this was something that was possible. I gave him the idea to ask. Tom's been a close friend of mine for over 10 years and is trying to use the forum more regularly. I always tell him how helpful I have found the members market has been to me. Its allowed me to buy and sell which has helped me hugely build my kit more affordably. He would just like to do the same thing as he's now taking photography a lot more seriously. This was mainly my idea to ask as I was unaware you had to wait 60days now to post in there. It use to be a post count back when I first started here.

Thanks for the more helpful response :) would be a good feature, why you not keen?

I also don't want to sell, happy to wait 60 days for that but I want to buy.

Its not a bad idea.. but probably more work for the mods.. taking references then monitoring... dunno... strange one.. has its plus and minus i guess:)
 
TBH I know of no other forum that operates like this, though there may well be some: for various reasons that seems to be how it is here.

AFAIK there's no reason your friend can't buy and sell on your behalf, provided they pay the seller or actually have the equipment being sold in their possession.

Yea just means I would have to have his credentials or bother him all the time to search, etc. Even less secure.
 
Yeah well we are close enough friends I can do that. Its just not practical, he wants to build himself a good reputation here himself and me buying only adds to my trading stats when its really his hard work :)I mean in regards to monitoring someone I ask to endorse seems a little overkill. I mean as a trusted long term user of the forums (Admittedly I haven't posted a great deal but the reshape of the forum of recent months has allowed me to enjoy it a lot more) there is a higher chance of someone mealy waiting 60 days to cause havoc than a trusted member who just wants to use the site for its offered services.
 
I can see all sorts of problems with making exceptions, where would you draw the line - the current rules are partly as a result of past problems. :)
 
Yes I know that is the problem with exceptions. There was no harm in generally asking though. I'm sure there has been cases where a trader has been harmed in transaction but I don't see how that forces a 60day wait as a solution? People who are around to cause misery will wait regardless.

i dont see how "vouching" could be done any other way than the other user posting on his behalf.

hence my comment :)

I came here originally to buy a camera - my sole reason for joining - and so far I've not bought anything, but I did recognise I could learn about how to take better pictures & that's why I stuck around.

60 days isn't a long time, and if you contribute a bit then likely find it easier to sell.

You can post for someone who is not on the forum, but you must have possession of the goods, and you will assume responsibility for the deal. Payment must be made to you, and delivery by you. No exceptions.

Hes not posting on behalf of me though?I am posting on behalf of myself to say I vouch for the user Hopest as someone with pure intentions to use the site as the majority of the members do with honest intent. I guess its a matter of when you are interested in spending hundreds on kit you want to buy in the moment but are happy to save the odd hundred here and there from trusted 2nd hand users this becomes a very desirable place to become apart of. I know thats how it happened with me.This is mainly my fault because I praise the quality of the traders here too much. I just tried to talk him out of buying from the pains that is eBay.

I think we both have a different meaning to "vouching" ..I and the OP and his mate... see vouching as a system where you vouch for someones honesty/integrity/reason or whatever to the mods and they in turn bypass the 60 day rule and let him post......thats a vouching system :)
 
no offence to you or your mate but answer this if the mods start this vouching system thats a unfair advantage to you over a new member that has not got a friend on the forum the buy&selling is based on 98% trust on here now are you say for talking sake willing to foot the bill if a sale go's wrong? i am a member of a lot of forums and have seen mate's at logger heads over a mate ripping people off the thing is most lenses etc exchange hands on here for a lot of cash
 
Does this rule apply to not being able to just view the members market too?

i appreciate that but that is something @Marcel would have to write (if he decides its a worthy idea and when he has time) into the site which is not available now. :)

Can Hopest see it, if not you have answered your own question.

What is the point of the rules then?

They are there for whatever reason the owners of the site see fit.

Hopest should have sent a PM asking if this was possible rather than an open post which will cause dissent.

If he is your friend, perhaps you should have asked for him, or at least advised him how to PM before this thread got so involved.
 
Of course if you can vouch for him then you would surely trust him, that being the case go and buy the wanted item for him, you do trust him to pay you dont you, you are after all vouching for him.

The query itself may seem innocent but it is questioning the rules about one of the most controverial parts of the forum so I feel you are being naive or disingenuous to think that there will no dissent.

Not "miffed" in the slightest.

However there is a reason the forum has rules, they are for everyones benefit and if people want to question them it would be better to do it in private.

Yes of course I would and do trust him. Its not a case of that, the OP stated that is doesn't want the hassle of using someone else's account. I mean really to do that is dishonest and he doesn't want to do anything dishonest. I have said I would regularly check the classifieds for anything you may be interested at the moment. Its an honest question and request. Yes I did say he should find a mod of the forum and PM that person but what he did wasn't at all deceitful if anything, posting it in a public forum shows more honesty. If there are rules to be completely abided by with no exception then thats the case and he will just wait until his user meets the desired requirements.

I know its against the rules to sell things that are from another user (no matter how close those users may be or have known each other). I think Hopest request was more from a viewing the forum to see what products are regularly posted that he may be interested in. Or from a buyers perspective which is essentially risk free. There no arguments going on here. It was just an enquiry :)

Theres questioning rules.. disagreeing with them.. saying there not right, moaning.... and then theres an innocent question from a newbie... Give him a break eh :)
 
Anyways.. I'm not his dad.. just thought it was a simple enough question with a valid reasonming behind it.. as said.. I think prob too much for mods and not 100% keen myself.... but seemed innocent enough so answered...

will leave the forced arguing about it to everyone else :) and for that reason i am...........
 
Oh well good job, my good friend Johnny has reminded me that I actually have signed up to this forum years ago which gets rid of the 60 days! Can't believe I forgot.

Thanks all for your help, I will delete my Hopest account and use this one. Kipax, thanks for your comments and input, much appreciated.
