Decided I would head for some photography last night..camera, tripod, filters all present so off I go for about a 20 minute drive to my pre planned destination..park car then short walk to field where I wanted to get my shots..set up camera on tripod and switched on..nothing, I'd left the friggin' battery in the charger plugged in at home!!
Now is that a classic error or am I an idiot?

Do you not carry a spare battery with you?

I'd say that makes you a classic idiot. :D I got all the way to the Gambia and found I had the batteries but had left the charger at home so had a 2 week photo holiday with no way of recharging or getting more batteries.

Time for a different hobby Robin, have you considered knitting? :D

Classic error.....meaning you're a classic idiot.

But be happy in the knowledge, I've been an idiot...I'll be an idiot again at some point....and so will 90% of the members on here :D

I always have a battery in the camera, as soon as I take one out to charge I replace it with another.

So there is an elite 10% of members on here. I wonder who they are?

You're not alone in being an idiot, I'v forgot memory cards, on a few occasions

:bang:

I just might be able to beat one or two, of those mad forgetful moments.

I once got into the car forgetting my camera bag that I had packed earlier, with my camera, lenses and memory cards. The missus said you forgot your camera bag. I dashed back in the house, picked the bag up and put it in the boot. When I went to get the camera bag out of the boot, once we had got to the park, I realised I had picked the sports bag up instead. The bag was neatly packed with our swimming gear.

Pity it was cold as we could have gone swimming instead :)

lol, that made me feel a bit better.

I once left the only memory card I had (I'd had my first DSLR about 3 weeks) in the laptop when I'd walked for an hour to test out a new IR filter I'd got. Set up the tripod, set the exposure, focused, put the filter on, wouldn't let me take a shot.

Haven't done it since as I bought loads a memory cards that day as soon as I got back.

Done it last week
My daughter said she was at the park with the bairn so I grabbed the camera, leaving the bag as it was only a quick shoot on the passing to visit mum in hospital
Got there, lined it all up for a shot on the swing, no memory card
I felt a proper plum
Easy done when you're rushing around though

The first time I went to an annual car show, I took a crappy P&S which struggled to take decent pics with the sun as its brightest. The following year, I bought a G12 (over much deliberation as to whether to buy another compact or go for a dSLR). Charged it up, remembered the battery and drove off. Only to get there and realised i'd left the memory card at home.

I now make sure there's at least one fully charged battery and empty memory card in the camera bag. Having said all that, recently forgot to check the battery charge on my flash and it ran out of juice within the first 30 mins.

Batteries, never, Memory cards, well that's a different matter. I always leave a Cf and a SD card in the car.

about a month ago i went for a good walk up the mountain its about 3 miles each way when i got to my destination i opened my bag everything was there apart from my camera:bang::bang::bang:

Last summer I parked my car and caught a ferry to the island if Luing. I hiked a couple of miles to a good viewpoint over the Firth of Lorn carrying a tripod and a rucsac with lots of lenses and kit. I was getting set up with fantastic light and a great view only to find that the only piece of camera equipment I wasn't carrying was my camera body. Oops!

Never batteries, always got spares in the bag, but only yesterday we went for a long drive to the Wiclow mountains, to an area I knew would have fast, rocky streams - and I fancied doing some long exposures. Of course I forgot the ND filter, never checked before leaving. Carried on regardless, just over exposed the shots a little to get some flow and dragged back in post. Got away with it just about.

made similar mistake today went to Nicky grist rally some 40miles from home spent 10min cut down all the high grass and brambles got cam out of my bag flicked on nothing only gone and left my bloody batterys on my table in the house :bang: least i still had a good day just spectating

I have done it as well :bang:
Nowadays I always take a shot before I leave home, that not only checks the battery & memory card but reminds me to check all the settings :)

I have done this way too many times! I once went out in the search of a field with bales of hay, packed all my gear, set off on my journey.

A found a field with a great view, a storm broke out and a rainbow appeared, I couldn't believe my luck! That was until I went to turn the camera on and found no power, yep you guessed it, batteries were at home!! Doh!!

I've done this several times but still refuse to buy a spare battery! (mainly because I've never needed a spare!)

I had a similar error last night, had a few minutes to kill so decided to walk around to York Minster.

I set the Linhof up on the tripod, zeroed all movements, levelled it up, put the cable release in, opened the lens up, composed, added some shift, checked everything else was zeroed, set focus, checked focus with a loupe, (all of this whilst sweating my nuts off under a heavy dark cloth) made sure all movements were still locked, used a spotmeter to check exposure, set the shutter speed and aperture, closed the lens down, removed the ground glass, fitted the digital back adaptor, fitted the digital back, set it to technical camera and the ISO to 25.

Then realised in rushing to pack a kit I'd forgotten the one crucial cable that goes from the shutter to the digital back to trigger the shot.

By the time I'd walked home (only 5 minutes each way) and got the cable the light had changed from the shot I'd envisaged.

b****r.

:bang::bang::bang: never done that myself, as I have 3 batteries for each of my camera bodies - 2 are not genuine Sony ones just the cheap generic type from Amazon around £15 each but good to keep in your bag

Les

Classic mistake!!
I once drove to Scotland for some long shutter stuff, packed everything in the car and made sure I had the tripod, filters, shutter release button etc. Got there and realised that the day before I had removed the QR plate from under the camera so couldn't use the tripod. I had to rest the camera on rock which was a total waste of time in the end. :bonk::D

Went from Basingstoke to Bournemouth one weekend to do some slow shutter landscape shots only to find I'd left the tripod base plate at home.

I made it all the way to North Wales with my filters and filter ring, yet no filter holder...

done that (although it was on skye) Blu tack is your friend in this situation - its more annoying when you find you have the holder but not the ring :bang:

never really had a prob with forgetting my locking plate for my tripod or ring for filters there both things iv fixed with cable ties and duck tape  where there is a will there a way i find cable ties and duck tape is a must for my cam bag

I always grab my camera and fire a shot before I leave. I also try to reset the ISO to 100.

2 more from the elite 10%

I took some photos with my Minolta SR-1, when the 35mm film was completed, I meant to take it to a shop for D&P, but left it in the car, to make matters worst, I returned home, and still forgotten to bring the roll of film in, still left it in the car for a few days. When was that? In the past few days.

And if any of you start with "The past few days? But that mean....."

Yes, I know, the heatwave and hot car, not good for a roll of 35mm film!!
