Clarkson suspended by the BBC, TG taken off air.

Different times different values the dog was called nigger because it was black. Nigger was still a derogatory term for a black person even then, just because it was in more general use doesn't make it less so.
That said my feeling on racist terms is it's all in the intent, if you use a word intending it to be racist then it is regardless of what the word is but some words have always been racist and in most circumstances cannot be understood as anything else.

I doubt if it was seen as derogatory by many folk back then. It was just a word. I can recall the first Pakistanis coming to Glasgow. They were referred to as Pakis. That name was just an abbreviation. No one thought twice about it.

Just read an interesting article that mentioned they may be headed to netfilx. Would make sense given their global appeal.

Heard that mentioned a few days back - trying to get my head around how that work work ?

I could make sense, both Netflix and Amazon Prime are producing a lot of original content these days and have (arguably) better distribution networks compared to traditional broadcasters.

That would be interesting and a good shakeup to the industry.

I've taken prime free for a month just so I can see if Bosch is any good.
Love the books.

Ive just started it up, half price as a student, £39 really only bought it for the delivery but the Prime video might be worth a look. Only watched a couple so far, vikings and black sails, not sure how impressed I am yet.

Try Outlander as well Steve, the first series of Vikings was good but it's beginning to drag a bit now.

The photo storage?

has anyone thought that clarkson might have engineered this himself ,take into account the silly pressures the beeb were putting him under ,i.e you can't say or do this that or the other under such and such a threat ,as your under contract to us ,if he had walked away they could/would have sued him for loads.
so in his own best interests do something that although seemingly not connected with the show gets him sacked ,without a breach of contract even coming into play .if i was in his shoes and as clever as he undoubtedly is its what i would have done

No need to engineer anything as this is a natural expiry of a contract. Just like the BBC didn't have to renew, he didn't have to renew either.

Why would you want to reengineer something like that which could have not just career limiting possibilities but also possible criminal prosecution consequences.

I've had prime for years to save on postage costs and considering the amount we get from Amazon it is good value. The I also had a love film subscription. I've given up the latter as between prime instant video which is free with prime membership and Sky movies back catalog we've got all the online content.

Oh and Netflix came free with my phone 4g contract so pretty good.

Cheers Hugh, there's quite a lot of choice it can be difficult to know here to start.

One thing I want aware of initially with Amazon prime is that you can share it with family members. My wife, father, and father in law all share the same account.

I have wondered the same. Not that the punch / verbal assault was the plan, but the reporting of the event by Clarkson. Maybe he wanted out without publicly quitting the show and saw this as being the final nail in his coffin and an easy way out while still being held in good esteem by his admirers.

Sunday Times suggesting BBC will bring him back. Negotiations are under way to let him resume his role as lead presenter of Top Gear for live shows in front of 100,000 paying fans, starting in Australia next month and culminating in the o2 Area in London at the end of November. The BBC are poised to allow Clarkson to return to avoid disappointing fans who have already bought tickets priced from £35 to £200. Should the BBC block the shows they could be liable for refunding all tickets at a cost estimated to be upwards of £10m.

Clarkson is also set to make a return to BBC television next month, hosting Have I got News for You on April 24.

Unscreened episodes of Top Gear that were canned after Clarkson's suspension on March 10th are also to be broadcast.

I hope they show the Porsche / McLaren / Ferrari shoot out they were trying to organise. Not too worried about Clarkson or TG if I'm honest but the shoot out would be good to see.

D

Which makes it a total farce. Either carry on as normal or sack him!

I posted on here a few days ago that I expect that the BBC will employ him again in the future. Not at all surprised.

....He is always good on that programme. Remember him throwing a pencil (or similar) at Ian Hislop? Oooo, an assault! Just shows how ridiculous all this TG storm in a teacup is.

And Have I Got News For You isn't made by the bbc either, so that's hardly surprising he's on that too.

That's right - It's 'Hat Trick Productions' who just said they have no reason to believe it wouldn't go ahead as planned.

you can't imagine hislop going wah wah about it and filing a complaint somehow

I don't think Oisin Tymon complained either.

no i don't think so either - some sources say that clarkson reported the incident himself... however it must have needed a statement from tymon at some point - and i guess he didnt go the ' nah guv i walked into a door' ,route

Not certain how that would pan out. Didn't Clarkson report himself? I can't see how it would be beneficial if Tynon made a contradictory statement, would only make him seem an unreliable witness and not somebody you want in your employment.

in the circumstances i'd agree - in Tymon's shoes i'd have hit him back (or kicked him firmly in the b*****ks), then both sides would have agreed there was nothing to report and dealt withthe matter mano et mano, not with a load of wah wah wah

likewise the point i was originally making was that its difficult to see Ian Hislop getting butt hurt because someone threw a pencil at him... he's the sort of guy who'd just throw it back and tell you to f*** off

....Exactly. Just a bit of horse play.

Quite. Just this morning my assistant forgot to get me a Danish so I slammed his head repeatedly in the photocopier. In return, he beat me with a broken pool cue until I got detached retinas. All harmless stuff.

Dictated but not read.

Horse play is something children do. It has no place in the workplace.

it depends on the work place - I've worked in places where that sort of thing would be standard behaviour, and anyone who went running to management about it would probably be told to f*** off and grow up (crying to teacher is something children do, it has no place in the work place) - ive also known foremen and chargehands etc who would give people with a problem the option of stepping out back and sorting it out man to man rather than going through formal process ( I've also heard similar stories from mates in the army - where the sergeant offers them the choice of a fine or instant punishment)

I'd stress that this isnt about bullying - bullies get their arses kicked in those sorts of environments.

Now I'm not saying that top gear is the equivalent of an infantry battalion, but its not your standard PC white collar environment either

....Goodness me! Do you have to be so serious? Posting on internet forums like TP while in the workplace, technically has no place either, but.

I don't mind growing old, just as long as I don't have to grow up :D

 - the other thing about those macho environments is that there are limits and people don't general cross them - giving someone mouthy git a slap and telling him to wind his neck in , is dramatically different to putting him in hospital.
