Clarkson suspended by the BBC, TG taken off air.

That would be clockwork.

I am confused by the term assault - I thought if you clocked someone it was battery

indeed the assault is the threat.

Although it is confused as it used to be common assault in common law.

Ian Hislop has just revealed on Question Time that Clarkson drew blood by throwing a pen at him on Have I Got News For You. Seems 'Jezza' has a bit of a temper on him.

Edit: clearly this post has been confusing people. For the avoidance of doubt, it is a joke.

I remember seeing the episode, it was a jokey skit that looked quite contrived with laughs all round.

Found it on YouTube

Yup, absolutely appalling behaviour. In the words of Alex Ferguson, 'he could have killed him'.

Assaults are all basically the same thing, seperated by degrees of injury.

So at the bottom end there's common Assault
An assault is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to apprehend the immediate infliction of unlawful force.

Battery follows that
A battery is committed when a person intentionally and recklessly applies unlawful force to another.

But in general both the offences are referred to as common assault.

The offenses go up in severity, along with the degree of injury - ABH, GBH, GBH with Intent.

Those are the distinctions in Criminal Law, and while the principle of assault is the same in Employment law, the degrees, Common Assault, ABH etc aren't carried over.

Not sure if you are serious. Blimey haven't you lived a little. I could go after so many people in that case.

Damn I remember that time during basic training where my I got kicked in the stomach without forewarning to demonstrate how you can take out your opponent. Or I still have a size 12 foot print in my back from that time I turned around whilst holding my browning 9mm loaded. I never got caught out, nor pointed a loaded gun unless I meant it ;)

But even today in the workplace. Yes the marker pens, whiteboard scrubbers etc may fly around at times. And a "friendly" punch gets thrown as well. Id be concerned when other who aren't involved would complain about it.

This country is turning into a nation of sissies.

Hum, video evidence doesn't support your biased view.

I remembered that incident when Hislop was talking about it on QT last night, which btw you would have to be a bit naive to not realise he was saying it very tongue in cheek, though I suspect some of the panel members probably are that naive on a whole range of stuff ;)

I think my second post on the subject reveals how I feel about 'pen gate'. I may need to add sarcasm tags to future posts...

Top Gear would be ruined if they filled it with serious reviews. Part of the appeal for me is most of the stuff they get up to are all things that my motor trade mates and myself would love to, but don't have the means/money to do it. So I guess we are living our dreams a little through them :) I've said it on numerous occasions that the show works on the premise that it's 3 blokes who get together and think what would we most like to do which involves cars.

Whole heartedly agree!

I'm not in the motor trade but love watching them c*cking about in cars or just ragging the arse off the latest Ferarri, Lambo, Porsche etc.

"Real World" reviews are all well and good but when it comes to the mundane family hatchback, information can be easily found on the internet now and in any case, it would be very easy for not so impartial review to boost sales of Ford/Vauxhall/VW's latest shopping cart. Let's be honest, most of us are mainly influenced by cost and practicality when it comes to buying our "every day" cars. We may have a preference but it's not really likely to be swayed by what we see on TG. A quick test drive would soon highlight if there was anything about a particular car which you wouldn't be able to live with/without.

For me, it's the 3 presenters that make the show. I think I watched the American or Aussie TG once..... and it was just once! Whilst the format of the show was the same, the chemistry of the presenters just wasn't there and IMO it was dire to watch them trying to be like Clarkson, May and Hammond. Yes, it's scripted, yes it's predictable but it's cracking entertainment IMHO.

I recall hearing Clarkson say that the BBC sold the concept of Top Gear to Channel 5 although retained the name. Therefore implying that they couldn't redo Top Gear in the original format.

Hey we have only reached 7 pages of froth, Jezza would be appalled. There needs to be lot more publicity gained before auntie Beeb turns face and producer apologises to Jezza for making him even more notorious than he already was. 99% of things on TG are staged for publicity. You think this is any different?

Personally I would be very surprised if this was a publicity stunt. A very costly one where BBC will have to large damages to each and every network it sells Top Gear to, at a time when Top Gear is not showing any slipping in popularity - makes no sense to me.

Latest "news" is that JC dobbed himself in for the fracas.
In other news, Brian Johnson's, The Cars That Rocked returns to Quest for a 2nd series on April 16th. Can't wait.

If JC reported it himself then it makes it more ludicrous that they've suspended him in the first place!

BBC really are a bunch of muppets.

Lets discuss the enforced tax, or licence fee as its covertly referred as.

Sure. I think it represents excellent value for money. I also accept not everyone feels that way, so would be happy to move to a subscription model.

Indeed. Think the Greens have probably lost voters after last night's shambolic performance. She would be wise to duck out of the leaders' debates.

I'm all for civil disobedience and not paying it. I rent my TV delivery from another company, why should the BBC (with it's huge tiers of outdated management) have the privilege of having a rtax taken from us?

It's good news that it doesn't appear to have been that serious and the 'victim' wants to move on.

Hopefully beeb management can get the investigation moved along quickly and put this to bed.

I don't think it should. Hence my suggestion of a subscription service.

I must be one of the few who doesn't object to the fee. Its far cheaper then say Sky, for what is IMHO a higher standard of programming

Also worth remembering that the licence fee pays for other things too - like infrastructure. The largest part of the UK's digital switchover was funded that way.
Plus it provides services that commercially may not necessarily be hugely profitable, but fulfil a need - like the Welsh and Gaelic language programming.

Yes, it's cheaper on the face of it, but you still have to pay it even if you don't want to watch BBC. Also, it gets you at best 5 (not inc HD versions of SD channels) channels, OK, might be more if you watch sport, v how many Sky ones?
So is it really cheaper?

and all the Beeb radio stations.

Yep, definitely cheaper. And for the additional reasons mentioned by Ade and Sarah too. It's not purely about how many, but Imho the quality is better on the BBC and I don't have to sit through 20 mins of adverts for and hours tv either

If all of them went, I wouldn't shed a tear. BBC made dramas and TG tend to be great, and I like BBC news, but theres a lot there I don't like. Same applies to non state tv/radio too.
I listen to radio 5 and 5 extra a lot. I don`t have sky so listen to various sporting events on them.

Don't forget natural history. Don't see ITV consistently churning out brilliant NH series.

Quite like the BBC current affairs stuff, Iplayer, Science, Nature and thought they were rather good in F1 before the Sky deal.

The BBC is like public transport, its not quite as comfy and as fast as a car, sometimes the service is poor and sometimes you need to sit next to someone who smells, but it expands peoples horizons and takes people pretty much were they need to be going, or alternatively get off and walk.

Back on topic, the latest as tweet'd by the producer Oisin Tymon who was allegedly hit really puts all those who were baying for JC's blood to shame. They were acting like a prejudiced lynch mob without knowing any facts! Fair enough if you don't like Jeremy Clarkson but really!! Call yourselves civilised? :D
