Yes
Its a lot of years since i had an old car so a bit out of touch,i know now this isnt the best time to buy diesel cars but there are not many petrol versions about.

I am retired my wife will be soon and we will be going places that dont have toilet facilities, even the place we go a lot at Cleethorpes the council have closed the toilets, for me not a problem but its different for a lady so we want a vehicle that has room in the back for our camping toilet, and space for a couple of folding chairs if we want to sit and watch out of the wind.

We are looking for something cheap about 10 years old and will do about 4000 miles a year any thoughts on the diesel versions and how high the mileage can be would be appreciated, are the Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen versions all using the same engines.

Thanks mike

The berlingo was often used for it:s load area and was a van at first but made a good conversion for many uses. The diesel engine is strong and spares /parts readily available. The range included a high roof conversion which allowed a wheelchair bound person to access the rear via a lift. S good choice for something extra, like privacy blinds to allow the use ofa camping toilet or even a caravsn cassette loo with a small water pump? Terrible to think about the lack of basic sanitary facilities but I experienced som of thid myself following a recent stroke and the potential loss of dignity does keep people housrbound.

Failing that, perhaps a smsll campervan, given the low annual mileage you indicate, there are some bargains to be had?

Steve

Take note of all the publicity that diesel engines are getting now

My Berlingo has done about 100,000 miles without any problems bar the particulate filter needing attention at about 90,000.
They are 'slab-sided' so do get buffeted about in the wind a fair bit.
If you keep the speed down the consumption isn't too bad - maybe 45-50mpg but at motorway speeds 40 is about as good as it gets.
A lot of local ones here in Cornwall are ex Motability so have been well looked after.
It is a perfect workhorse for me to transport tools and then double up as the family car but there is not a lot of pride-of-onwership for me.
Like Steve above, I'd be tempted to look at a campervan given what you say about your needs and usage.

Why don't you look at VW range. Sharan, Touran or Caddy would be perfect for you. They will be more expensive, but far less temperamental, nice to drive and live with and easier to find spares.

I had a fiat doblo XL, handy little van, Ronnie Corbett could have stood up in it , avoid the 1.3 diesel, did 80,000 miles in 3 years on the 1.6 diesel , didn't miss a beat

Nearly scrapped the idea thanks to Saga,i get a good price on my current car with them and they quoted just over £700 for insurance,i know its gone up, put it through moneymarket and the best quote was £200,dont think Saga took my 70% off,so the idea is still on,dont want another camper van done that before and i have a Dandy folding camper anyway.

We drive Berlingo vans at work, and they are usually scrapped around the 200,000 mark. the odd one or two has got nearer the 250,000.
The current one I have is approaching a couple of years old, and does an overall 45+mpg, ( I don't hang about ;) )
Its a bit newer than you were thinking, I know, but it came with traffic master (live) sat nav, reverse camera, blue tooth touch screen DAB radio and driving computer.
I do circa 250 miles a day, and find it comfortable enough, the only minor criticism, is that at 6 feet tall, the driving cabin is adequate, in size, although I do also prefer a stretched out driving position.

Hmm - wish mine was as good as that..
I really struggle to get an average of 40mpg per tankful unless it is all pottering about on the back roads.
Mine is about 7 years old so maybe they have improved since then..

4000 miles per year isn't playing to the strengths of diesel, unless that's going to be infrequent journeys of a decent length. Perceived wisdom would be to go with the petrol. Running costs aren't going to be much different on such a small average mileage.

I run a C3 Picasso and my neighbour runs a Berlingo, both with the PSA 1.6HDi turbo. This engine has suffered in reputation from being put into a lot of vehicles and mis-sold to lots of people that do lots of short journeys and never give the engine a good run, and perhaps skimp on the maintenance. Well maintained with regular oil changes it should beat the reputation it's gained for eating turbos. Over the years the PSA 1.6 diesel engine has been developed quite a bit but I've not seen any comparative reliability analysis for the different iterations. Fords have had some terrible problems with it, but they did make unique changes from the version used by the other manufacturers. BMW have been happy to use it in the Mini.

I'd avoid low mileage diesel cars of that age as much as high mileage cars. Watch out for cars with a DPF approaching 100k that haven't already had the DPF changed as that would be something you'd then be prudent to budget for.

I do about 100 miles to and from "my areas" either cruising on motorways or largely duel carriageways, the rest is running around urban areas.
Best I've achieved is 50 mpg, but 45 mpg is the norm.

I've a 2006 citroën berlingo multispace, it's now got 71, 000 and other than the terrible colour it's been a great running and reliable car. Would recommend and if I change it'll be for a newer version.

Why don't you look at small MPV's like the Zafira or C Max. if it has privacy glass your wife will have all the privacy she needs whilst on the loo and simply remove one of the folding rear seats to place the toilet instead. It's going to drive a lot smoother and handle better than a van and you will have more choice of engines petrol or diesel,

I drove one when I did a 10 week stint at Majestic, hated the lights and satnav, otherwise I liked it.

Petrol would be my first choice, only asking about diesel as most of them are diesel and i may not find a petrol one i fancy.

Mine gets 52 mpg and it's the same driving locally as it is on motorways on long runs.

Steve.
