I've noticed lately that i have a couple of circular type marks appearing on my photos and wondered what it might be and is it easily sorted.

Any help welcomed :)

It would help if you could post a photo or two to show as what circles you mean. I once had little dots in mine. Once I posted them on here I was told that there was a speck of dirt on the mirror...true enough there was. problem solved

I'll try and put some up but i'm not much good with that sort of stuff yet:(.....the marks are more visible on shots that include the sky and lighter subjects.

The marks are not seen through the viewfinder but can be seen on photos.

The lens is a tamron 70-300.

Have you tried cleaning your camera?

I will take it and get it cleaned i think, its only a year old but i guess these in camera cleaning operations can only do so much.

Are they small dark spots, that only show up on pictures (not in the viewfinder) and only at higher f/numbers?

That's dirt on the sensor. It's inevitable sooner or later. You can usually get them off with a rocket type blower but if not there are various cleaning options, if you're careful. Or get a service centre to do it for you.

If the spot(s) are solid, with hard edges then it is dust/dirt, and can normally/hopefully be removed by a blower.

If the spot is Doughnut shaped, it is probably some dried liquid, and has to have a 'wet' clean.

Thank you for replying, I hope to get back shortly, let me have a closer look at the cameras and the photos and take on board what you have said. Many thanks.

Vic, apart from the waterproof models, no camera (with a zoom) is a completely sealed unit and dust can get inside and onto the sensor. Even a sealed unit could have dust inside from day 1 in the factory (even a clean room is only relatively not absolutely dust free) which can migrate onto the sensor.

How have you examined the sensor on your DSLR? the specs of dust that cause the circular marks are microscopic (think how many pixels the cicle is wide and calculate your pixel size - most of the specs are invisible to the naked eye.

Post a pic Vic. It's easy enough to tell what they are by looking at them.

On the 40D, a dust spec is easy to miss on the sensor, especially if you are looking in the wrong place. The image on the sensor is inverted and swappped left to right - flipped diagonally.

On the your SX2000, it's still possible for dirt to get on the senor. The sensor is so small evn the tiniest mote can show up. Compacts are generally not hermetically sealed.

Edit: and welcome to TP :)
