Cigarette smoke smell

Weirdly, over the last week or so I have been getting a cigarette smell in my lounge. I absolutely detest the smell of smoke and to have it in my house is really annoying. Its weird because the neighbour I assume its coming from has been in there at least 2 years and Ive never noticed before. so either he's recently started or, er, not sure. And even if I close the windows that open on to "his side" I still get the smell. Maybe its coming down the gas fire flue but seems unlikely although it does draw air down sometimes.

Anyway I cant really go round ask people to stop smoking in their own house so left with trying to filter it somehow.

does white vinegar or baking soda in a bowl work?

If I can "overpressure" my lounge by blowing fans into it that may work so long as the fans are drawing in untainted air.

Also an air purifier/hepa / carbon filter type solution maybe? dont want to be spending more than £40 or £50 for one though really.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

No real answers, Keith, just a few thoughts.

Does everyone in the room detect the smell, or just you?

Does the smell of smoke occur only when your neighbour is at home?

If it is coming down (seems a little unlikely as the smoke would have to get outside and then be drawn down into your lounge) the gas fire flue it might indicate there is some problem with the flue, or perhaps the weather conditions of the last few days have created something that causes the smell to get into your home.

Perhaps a crack in the mortar in the chimney allows smoke to get through to you.

It has been known to smell things that are not really there, I'm sure there a medical name for it, its on gogle somewhere. I occasionally get the fag smoke smell and neither my wife the neighbour or me smoke. I've even had a slight smell of exhaust fumes from a car even though there no motors in the street and windows closed. My wife never smells these things which confirms it's me. It's weird but if it bothers you perhaps a visit to the quack is in order.

Cheers for that. If that were the case would I not smell it other places too, not just in the lounge? Must admit I wondered whether it was just me. Only me lives at home so I cant ask anyone else. Pretty sure its a genuine smell though

He's drilled a tiny hole, and is puffing smoke through to tease you. ;)

Was in a pub playing a gig last night, and for the first time in years we got a really strong cigarette smoke smell, blown through from the smoking area at the back. It felt like a proper grown up time out - pubs should always smell like that, even if you hate the stink when you get home.

Poltergeists smell of rotten eggs so its not that.

There was a thing on the radio sometime back, whereby the anti smoking brigade were trying to get people to stop smoking in their houses, because the smoke / smell would travel from one house to another.
(semi's obviously) I've never smelled smoke from next door, but then again, they don't smoke.

I haven't got a semi.

Stop sniggering at the back!

Pretty sure he lives alone and I have a sneaking suspicion he "bats for the other side". Mind you he probably thinks that about me, apart from the fact that my dustbin goes out more often than I do. Bah.

That is a silly thing to say, you will have @DorsetDude paranoid now. No it is more than likely, the neighbour has gotten hold of a spare key somehow. Let's himself in when he sees @DorsetDude go out, makes himself a cuppa, and has a smoke ;).

Funny you should mention that about a key. I got home the other evening and there was a right skidmark down the back of the pan and Im sure I never left it!

Ive lowered the tone again havent I? Damn this aspergers!

The spare key thingy seems even more likely now, maybe he has. Maybe he is trying your clothes on, while you are out .

I have had the smell of smoke very strong once, it was coming from under the skirting board. Got talking to the neighbour, and it turned out he was changing his carpets. When he moved the old carpets, he did not put the new ones down immediately. So that left a little gap, and the smoke was able to creep under.

shades of the twilight zone ,smoke and skid marks ,letting himself in to administer date rape drugs to your tea/coffee one morning you'll wake up wearing lipstick with a sore bum and won't remember a thing :police::police::police::police::exit:

SNAFU for Keith, that is!
