I'm doing a product shoot for a small cider producer, and have been scouring the net for some ideas, and have picked up some good tips, he wants basic white background product shots of the cider bottles, and some more creative shots for advertising etc. there's not a big budget for this, and I can't afford a lot of new kit, new baby, new house.....
what i've got to use
450d, kit lens, nifty fifty, sigma 24-70 f2.8, 55-250, 70-300, 60 f2.8 macro
430ex II flash, ebay triggers, fitp big softbox, 80cm light tent, 5in1 reflector
what i'm after is some good ideas from you kind folk on lighting ideas, how to get the best out of what i've got, i'll probably be using good natural light for the shoot, early evening, to use the apple trees as a nice background, and using the tent for the white background shots
all advice is much appreciated
cheers

You'll have to get a move on, or will you wait until the blossom's out?

bottle on a bench, in front of OOF apple trees seems to have been pretty much trademarked by magners or similar, but would still look good. could do that but with models / the producer holding a bottle or something (wouldnt have to be full length portrait, even just the bottle held by them and a crop to include say their hand or something could work? I can visualise it but not explain it :P

natural light at the moment is really nice, but slight cto a speedlight through fitp softbox on low power could give the bottle a nice extra bit of contrast and warmth (though drag the shutter slightly to let some 'real' light in...)

good shout guys, yeah i was planning on doing what i can at the moment, and then getting the blossom shots in the spring, gives me a chance to get 2 shoots out of it
the photos he's using on his site at the mo need quite a lot of updating, so am seeing this as a bit of a project, he needs cider making portrait shots too, hence this time of year.
i've also got a plan for a bit of "photoshopping" apple bites out of the bottle for an advert, probably a bit cliched, but look great to me
appreciate your advice
cheers

Bottle with some nice water droplets on it from a spray bottle, glass with cider and ice in surrounded by some of the apples with out of focus trees/barrel/etc in the background instantly springs to mind....anyone else really fancy a drink now?!

Maybe a bottle or four holding up a very heavy object, (car or similar) to indicate a strong cider ... photoshop will be your friend here

that's a cool idea, or maybe holding up a tractor with a more rural feel?
I heard that it's good using a mix of glycerin and water in a sprayer to get the cold look, anyone got any more advice on dressing products such as bottles?
cheers

why is it that the people without the knowledge, without the gear and without any ideas keep getting offered these kind of jobs?:cuckoo:

Cause it's cheaper than getting a pro in I'd guess

Everyone has to start somewhere....

If he doesn't provide the goods, he won't get paid, then they will look for someone with more experience.

All true.

Just a little tip from having done this in the past - it's VERY hard to get a good bottle/label out of a shop! To get a perfect bottle/label you'll need to get it from the client - even harder if you are going to use more than one bottle in the same shot. Just getting straight labels perfectly lined up will almost certainly mean sticking them on yourself!

My effort, i was well under the influence and a bit grainy.

or possibly that he liked my photography so much he felt i was the best person to do his shoot for him

or the cheapest? good luck anyway - post a pic.
What would your client think if he saw you posting these questions on here?

Probably that he's taking it serious enough to do some research and ask what potential customers find interesting.

I guess he'd think I was being thorough..........
so are you telling me it's not ok to post on here asking for ideas, I have a load anyway, and am not totally clueless as you seem to be implying................

and besides, i was not asking for business advice, hence why i posted in the lighting section and not the business section

I really don't know what your problem is and why you are being so negative, when others have been so helpful?

cheers

nice idea, blue eagle, I've asked him to come back with some ideas on how he'd like his cider to be portrayed, ie traditional vs modern style, from what I know of the guy and his brand, it would be traditional values.....with a bit of fun/cheek
have some great ideas already in the bag, but has been great to hear what you guys think too
cheers

Cheers, yeah possible, the lights i used was my tower lights that have two 12w nightlight bulbs in, just highlight my tv.

its an idea for ya any way. hope you get sorted mate.

i like it david, but I guess a little lighting from behind would have lifted the contents a bit?

Cheers Luke, at the moment it's just the name of his orchard, but he's a clever bloke, and so no doubt will come up with some brands/slogans himself for me to use, i've already sent a few mock up adverts in to him
most of the photos i'm planning will use natural light, as i feel that would be best, with a bit of enhancement from the softbox, it's just great hearing all your ideas :)
cheers

Bear with me lol ... Man crouching by tractor with wheel on the floor by him. Instead of a jack, he's holding the tractor up with a bottle of West Country Jack ... Much more than just a cider.
