Been asked by a elderly friend if he can use Chromecast on his tv, it has hdmi ports but no ethernet socket. He does not have android phone of laptop but he does have a decent spec desktop computer. Would Chromecast connect to his router via wifi without the need for android/IOS devices?

I've never used Chromecast or such device so I'm unable to answer his question properly, I'm hoping I can get a answer here.

CHromecast I believe gets its content via a PC or mobile device. It is not a stand alone device.

What does he want it for? Amazon Fire TV or Apple TV may be more suitable.

Probably downloading motor bike racing/moto gp videos which is all he is really interested in to the computer then view it on the tv, preferably free without having to pay subs to Sky etc

I have a Chromecast and it's great. It needs an HDMI port and power via a USB port - either from the back of the TV if it has a USB port or via a power unit with a USB output.
It will connect to your wifi router and will need setting up from the laptop via Chrome browser and a Chromecast add-in. It doesn't have to be used with IOS or Android but it will limit what you can do with it.
If you only have a PC you the it will only allow you to Cast from any tab of the browser, which works ok but it means data must travel from the laptop to the TV rather than just pass a link to the Chromecast and let it go and get the data stream directly fromn the internet as can be done in the Youtube app for example in IOS or Android. Great device for £30.

Currently if you buy Chromecast from Amazon you get a £4.99 Google play credit.:)

I've had a Chromecast, well 2 actually for about a month or 2 now, love them, and combined with my Synology I have everything I need! The system works remarkable well from Chrome, but to be honest you get most of the functionality when using an Android or iPhone with it. And for clarification, the phone simply acts as a remote control for it, the Chromecast connects to the media source directly, so you can start a stream, then turn your phone off if needed or simply close the app :)
