Had to do a reinstall of Windows last week and lost all my software, including my Avast antivirus. Reloading that today (weekends are wife time, so stay off this machine then) and forgot to uncheck the Google Chrome box, so at the moment, that's being downloaded. Any way to stop it? I'm perfectly happy with IE as my browser and have no interest in Chrome (so, NO advice to use it, please!), so want to stop the process or at least remove it when it's downloaded/installed. It's taken ages to install so far which is why I want to stop it. Esc doesn't work and the Cancel button is greyed out. Just about to resort to Task Manager and stopping it. I that the best/only way? Task manager only lists it as Avast Setup and I want to carry on with that, just not have Chrome hijacking my computer!

I know it's my own fault for not opting out but IMO, having to opt out is plain rude and invasive - if you want something, you should have to opt in rather than having to opt out if you don't want it!
 
Just go to "start menu", "control panel", then "uninstall a program" if using Vista, should be a similar process even on Windows 7, XP etc
 
Try Task Manager to stop Avast.

Otherwise good luck getting rid of Chrome once it's installed cos it gets everywhere!
 
No it doesn't, it is fine, just remove in the normal way.
 
Mike, I don't want to stop Avast, just Chrome. As I type, it's still installing, over 1/2 an hour later.

Rich, uninstalling it doesn't phase me at all (had to do it for Norton), just a little worried that it leaves odds'n'sods cluttering up the hard drive and registry - Dale's post is reassuring in that respect.

Got to go out to a Hospital appointment shortly - if it's still going when I get back, I'll stop everything and restart the Avast process but tick the relevant box this time!

As it happens, the instalation failed for some reason, so problem solved (although there may be bits'n'pieces floating around!) Can carry on with Avast registration now.

Glad it's sorted, I knew you wanted Avast but thought my suggestion might stop the Chrome too and give you a chance to try again.
 
It was a Net Framework 2.0 application, this means it doesn't get installed in the usual way, it didn't go into Program Files, it went into each individual user area. It only existed for an individual user. If another user wanted it, they had to install it as well. I cannot see why you needed to go into the registry to remove it unless I missed an early version which worked in a different way.

It has changed recently so that it is installed system wide.
