No
.....now when clicking the "X" it takes approx 10 seconds to close.

As far as I am aware nothing has changed other than the now very slow 'closing'.

FWIW I have always had lost of tabs open and read somewhere that that can be a cause but if so why just in the past few days has its speed of closure increased???

TIA for any insights & feedback :)

It's instant here, you might try disabling any add-ons one by one, something might need manually updating.
I suppose it might also be trying to sync.

Thanks for the heads up....................wracking my brains....................I think I recall clearing the Cache a few days back (no idea why I had to do that at the time???) So, I need to review my Chrome settings but I did not knowingly alter any other settings?

@Yardbent thanks for the reminder, as I recall you recommending that 'Chrome' related browser before ;)

Real chrome is better if you use it over various devices and want to sync and will be much more promptly updated to fix security issues..
I see you can hit a button to update extensions here chrome://extensions/

I only have a single extension " Print Friendly & PDF " and it currently "turned off"

Edit ~ looking in/at Chrome settings I spotted this one:-

Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed and it is set to "on". I can only surmise that has been the case all the time.....?

As mentioned I keep a good number of tabs open.....................

So, I thinking that it might be just one tab that the trigger for the issue, I started by closing each tab in turn > closing > restarting > closing > adding the tab back in.

Well! the tab I started with was TP itself and closing and doing as I say above it all behaved as originally i.e. a proper 'snappy' closing on all tabs :) I re-introduced TP and it seems all is well.............but what was it running in TP that could have been the cause??? NB finding that TP seemed to be the cause I did not try any other tabs.

I may have spoken too soon, as in it appears to be more random..........................???

If as above I close and then re-introduce a tab e.g. TP the all seems snappy again....................but by accessing and using the website the slowness starts to reappear???

So far a complete mystery :thinking::thinking::thinking:

With Chrome it's *usually* extensions :) Also, Chrome likes to hang on to memory so if you have lots of tabs open it may be taking a while to clear that.

Could your internet connection be wobbling? I've noticed that browsers seem to want to contact websites as they close pages now.

This won't be a popular opinion, but I really like the new version of Edge :D

If it's still playing up you could uninstall chrome and download again, when you log-in it will repopulate all your stuff with any glitches hopefully resolved.
You would need to use another browser like Edge I guess - or download the initial executable first.
It makes sense to have at least a couple of browsers ready to go in case of temporary problems and you can be like two different people if you see want.

I did read that each tab is actually an new iteration of Chrome being opened........................which I knew because Task Manager shows them 'all'.

So undecided as to next/best course of action:-
Chrome ~ uninstall and reinstall? NB must save my Bookmarks beforehand.......hopefully a way to reimport them?
Revert to IE11 ???
Download the new version of Edge and see how I get on???

Just a bit annoying, as I started to find IE11 cludgey and Chrome has been a very good browser :(

Update

I decided to update Edge and it upon opening invited me to copy accros all my relevant Chrome 'elements' including all tabs open at the time. :)

A few things a needed to check...........like how to make sure once closed it would open with all previous tabs :D

Lastly, looking at the Privacy settings ~ anything specific anyone thinks I should be aware of??? i.e. what to turn off and what to leave at the MS defaults???

To echo what was said above ~ it is oh so Chrome like you might think that you were using Chrome :)

PS as far as I could tell Chrome is a non colour managed browser but Edge is colour managed ~ as a photographer, whats not to like as far as that is concerned :D

PPS meant to add ~ now on Edge ~ in Task Manager Edge is just like Chrome i.e. each tab is a separate iteration of Edge...........................but so far it is behaving just like Chrome used to do when closing it ~ snappy....though about a 1s pause ;)

Oh, upon opening unlike Chrome it takes a bit longer to refresh the tabs

Ref: EDGE

I have seen and found something I don't recall seeing on Chrome...................that is Collections.

None too sure where and how they 'fit' in the scheme of things but looks very interesting in regard to having a clearly defined & saved subset of pages about a subject e.g. Olympus cameras, Editing videos....etc.

Why do I think it is a good idea ~ well, it is all very well bookmarking pages....but where the heck did I save the bookmark. Whereas the collections allow for visual clues as to page contents and I can add notes if needed....whats not to like :)

I command you all to stop liking Edge!!!!

It's part of the rules - Bill Gates may be the greatest philanthropist of all time and nothing to do with current Microsoft but we can't forgive him for Windows ME. Therefore we aren't allowed to like Edge :D And don't get me started on Visual Studio Code.....

So, should I uninstall it or is it too late? If it's too late, I'll have my Mac crushed. :p

Well!

I have found that Edge also has a delay (though mostly brief) when clsoing.

AS mentioned above I have created collections of pages as appropriate to remove active tabs......................because I surmised that it was possibly caused by something 'active' of one/some webpages?

This has cut down the number of open tabs quite markedly but there is still a pause in Edge has been running for a while > closing (with the slight delay) then launching Edge again and re-closing immediately it closes instantly. No clear idea as to why it behaves this way................c'est la vie???

I searched and one suggestion was in Settings to select what to "Clear" on closing should speed it up but what to select?

I have just had a look at mine and it closes in <2 secs.
Have a look in settings ( 3 dots top rhs gives drop down menu) and look in sync and see what its doing. it might be worth turning sync off and see what happens

Unlike with Chrome where I was signed in with my Googlemail account.....................I have not signed in/setup and account for Edge to 'work with'!

I searched in Settings and found "Background Sync" was 'on' and I have now turned it 'off'. Though there were no URLs associated with that function/action :)

If you uninstall chrome and download again your bookmarks will be there in a minute or two when you log-in
Along with site passwords etc if you saved them.
If you also have android devices chrome is synced across them all if you want it to be.
Edge is better than the abomination IE had become - which some still insist on using.
At least I haven't come across a site for a while now that only works properly if you use IE.

Er, you do realise that Edge is actually Chrome don't you? :)
MS ditched the old Edge codebase in January 2020 (well obviously planning it much earlier) and switched everyone over to a Chrome based version of Edge.

Chrome is a memory hog, it's always up top of task manager as the main culprit for any slow downs especially on lower/older RAM machines. The less tabs you keep open the better. Like others suggested , try uninstalling it and start afresh - try it without any extensions for a bit, see if that improves things - in that case it'll likely be an extension that's dragging it. I've had issues with Chrome in the past but on much slower machines, since getting a decent PC with fresh/faster RAM I've had no issues, pretty much instant for all actions even with a bunch of tabs open. I keep extensions to a min - just an ad-blocker, an extension to improve Twitch [live game streaming site] and other than that I just use a simple dark theme and have my main bookmarks along a bar up top.

Ok to summarise, in no particular order:-

Yes Chrome is a resource hog......but as mentioned it used to be "well behaved" and nothing that I am aware of changed.

I only have one extension and it is inactive.

Yes, I am and was fully aware that the newest version of Edge is based on the 'Chromium' source code.

At this stage I am finding Edge to be very useful ~ as in:-
Collections, a nice function for putting readily available groups of 'in common webpages'.

Very familiar overall feel to Chrome.

Though not confirmed ~ Edge can be a bit slow to close if there are more than 2 tabs of youTube open with videos paused.
