I'm looking at various backdrops and it seems everyone is pushing these Green Chromakey backgrounds

I can't see the use, if you can select and cut properly in PS

Is there something I've missed?

I think it can help reduce the time required to get a very good mask, especially around fine hair detail..

The issue I run into with high key backgrounds is that often the light will tend towards white at the very edge of the clothing/skin and masking that out means doing it all by hand.. and obviously blond hair/reasonably lit against a white backdrop can leave a lot of work to do to get the inter-hair sections masked cleanly.

I use a green backdrop and the background eraser tool in PSP X4 to great effect, I can mask out 95% of subjects in 30 seconds flat with a very high degree of accuracy and a very detailed edge.. it might take me 30 mins if the skin lighting/background mean I have to manually define the edge or clean up from a magic wand kind of operation..

Could be my PP skills lacking though!!!

Ah that makes lots of sense

maybe I'll try some studio shots with a Chromakey BG

is there some FOC software I can trial?

If you intend to go down the Chromakey route then there are two options, the standard green/blue background or the green led ringlight and reflective backdrop.

With the backgrounds you must have even lighting and good subject separation (if not you can get a green/blue colour cast, the software is only so good) so you need a bit of space to shoot in.

The reflective background type is expensive but great if your limited for space

With both methods you can use Photokey software to batch output images or even better you can automate shooting output by using tethering, it really is that quick

I recall Ed Bray using some free software ages ago . Have a search on his posts and I'm sure that you'll find it.
