I am after a Canon 550D standard lens kit, it was going to be a Christmas present, partly funded by my partner. It seems to be going out of stock most places I have looked over the last few days. The best price I have seen is with Currys, with Quidco discount at £595, but they have no stock now. My local Jesopps has it for £650, but my max budget is £600.

Is it worth waiting to see what happens between Christmas and New year? Will there be some kind of sale? I know the VAT goes uo on the 4th January.

It would be nice to have it on Christmas day to play with, but if I could get it at a better price after, I would wait.

Must be a popular camera as it has gone out of stock in quite a few stores during this week.
 
It is a very popular camera. The bottom of the page in the link I gave does say next day free delivery, but it might be worth checking to see if they have it in stock. Keep us posted how you get on.

PS, One other thing if you phone them, ask if the camera has a full UK warranty and that it's not a grey import.

Hi Dougie,

Yes I agree, the Canon 550D is really a great camera, so easy to use and handy to carry around with you. I think that it is defnitley worth the price, I paid 700 for mine and have not regretted it! This camera lasts and lasts so just think of it as an investment.

I am in Bideford, as you know only 7 miles away. I worked at AMP in Torrington for several years untill we relocated to Bideford.
 
There is usually sales after Christmas, but I thought you are going to buy it as Christmas present.

Will you consider grey import?
 
It would be a Christmas, but if I am struggling to find one at a reasonable price, I would be prepared to wait to after.

I would like a UK spec version.

keep checking amazon, they sell for 620 quid but sell out quickly when they get them in stock, also john lewis get them in for a decent price and comet will price match john lewis as well, meaning you could walk into a comet store and get it for the same proce as JL around 620-630??
 
Just got the last one from RGB Photo, and it is a UK spec model.

Well done Dougie. Obviously we shall expect to see some sample shots. :D

Northam burrows will be a nice place to visit on Christmas morning. Should be some decent shots across Appledore and Bideford. I used to fish off the burrows.

Yes thats one of the ones i'm after and also a canon 100mm macro but which one the usm or is model, if i go for the usm macro i can also get the 250mm zoom one and still be cheaper than the i/s macro lens, seeing as i'm just starting out i think thats the way to go, now just to find the best prices on them both

I have an 100mm FD macro which is a bit of a faff to use with an FD-EOS converter. So I have decided to get a replacement in the new year and will probably get the none IS version of the EF 100mm macro, it will mainly be used on a tripod or macro rails, so IS for me wont be an issue. However, if I wanted stabilisation and my decision was based on price. I would probably go for the Tokina 100mm macro, haven't read a bad review for this lens.

Just tracked my parcel, and it is out for delivery from Exeter. If it arrives with all the snow we had last night is another matter!
Full marks to RGB Photo for their rapid service, only ordered it at 11.00am yesterday.
 
Has your camera arrived yet? I see you have bought a 55-250, its a great lens and a perfect partner for the 18-55. :thumbs:

how lucky are you with all the canon kits sold out
try buying a nikon kit for same price you wont be dissapointed and better quality in my opinion
 
Just tracked my parcel, and it has returned to Parcelforce's depot in Exeter again, due to the weather, what a bummer!
Funny, had two deliveries today from two different couriers, obviously Exeter must still be under 6 feet of snow!
 
It was out for delivery again yesterday, waited in all day, did not show up, useless!
Just checked the tracking number, and it is out for delivery again today, so will have to waste another day waiting in for it.
Like there is not enough to do at this time of year!
