I have a works Christmas party to attend. I'm going to be wearing a a charcoal suit but not sure what colour shirt and tie to go for. Any suggestions anyone?
 
Well this is a bit different. Style is very much personalty based, I don't know your personality or anything but I personally would go for a white shirt with that and then you can wear pretty much any tie you choose to because it won't clash with anything.

Ties are a very personal taste, I used to work in a gents outfitters and what one person would love, another would hate. Did you want to be particularly Christmassy or something?
 
I have a mankini you could borrow for the occasion...

Can't go wrong with a white shirt, please don't go for a black shirt, they've really not been in fashion since the 1980's. I know I was wearing one last week :P

Personally I would have a little fun with the tie, make it a Christmas one.

Now, I'd disagree.
With a suit, maybe, but as a slightly less formal ensemble, it works quite well, with the right tie, of course.

Got my company "do" tonight too.
As the newbie, I can't really not go. :(
 
Thank the pantheon that black shirts aren't fashionable - I don't need to change! :D

You have my commiserations, Ruth. Had you thought a little faster when you were told the date, you could have cried off using a prior engagement arranged before you started there as an excuse.

Sorry but a black shirt with a tie doesn't go with anything. And a black shirt with a charcoal suit most definitely doesn't go.

For the avoidance of doubt I wasn't saying that black shirts in general don't go. It was purely in context of the OP with his charcoal suit. I see too many (middle aged) men this time a year thinking that will make it festive ;)

A Dark blue shirt goes well with a charcoal suit and is very contemporary worn with or without a tie. You can't really go wrong with a white shirt. Maroon is also very dated but was popular in the 1980s and is worth striking off the list along Black.

Same at mine :) but I was a cheap guest, damn that Dragonfly is still hurting me. It sounded like such a good idea at the time to have chillies in my cocktail...
 
Hah, thanks for all the replies guys. I should of expected some of the jokier ones! I think I white sure for definite. Perhaps with a red tie or something. Would black shoes go ok with that?
 
Black shoes fine, brown shoes often seen with blue suits. You could nudge it up a bit by having a matching pocket square if you wanted, same material/pattern as the tie.
 
Go for the Josh Baskin look. You can't go wrong.(y)

Unless it is a formal Christmas party, I wouldn't bother with a tie. Then again, I'm not likely to bother with a suit neither. I only wear a suit for weddings or funerals and even then only if I have too.
 
We have a work do on Thursday (why not Friday?) which is 'dress to impress'.

I just can't be bothered to finish work, dress up and then have to be at work the next day.

Getting a local hotel is perfect for those kind of Christmas parties :)
 
"Mine" was Saturday gone, Moleskins, realtree jacket and stiff walking boots were the dress code.. :)





It may not "work" for a "posh do", but perfect for shooting (y)

Apartment hotels tend to be cheaper ;) sssh don't tell anyone.
 
Ours went OK....those girls who didn't make the effort were a little miffed when the special (no doubt very well paid) guest turned out to be Gary Barlow. :D (very affable, as it happens)

Still the talk of the production canteen today, apparently. :D

Sounds like mine, we went to Bisley during the day but then a posh hotel in the evening. I had to pick three wardrobes; waxed and blow dried my coat as well.

Oh wow, someone wasn't Scrooge :) Surely the less effort the better, I mean easier to drop to the floor ...

I'm not a particular fan, but I have to say, he was very charming.
Ate the dinner, mingled, posed for innumerable pictures, happy to chat and gave us 4 songs on the old joanna., and was still mingling at 12.30 when I left.
Good on 'im. :-)

Sounds fantastic. Any mistletoe insight or was he obliging regardless ;) please do tell us the gossip at the nutters meet if you are coming (no pun intended :p)
