I need to buy a christening (naming ceremony) gift but the family ain't religious......I would like to get something that the kid can have some sort of spiritual but not necessarily religious guidance or reference...any ideas guys and girls

The first thing that sprung to mind was a "St Christopher" (Patron saint of travellers) pendant / necklace.
Sort of spiritual and would guide the the child on his / her journey through life?

Although based in Christianity, a nice little keep-sake which ever way you look at it?

Sarah and I thought of the same thing :-)

How about an actual oak tree? A small sapling that can be planted somewhere where the child can watch it grow, as he grows too? Maybe a small plaque to go with it, dedicating it to the person concerned. The trouble with keepsakes is that they can lose their significance to the recipient as he grows up.

That's a nice idea too.
Not sure too many people have the space on their property for a full sized Oak, but a Bonsai Oak could be an option (depending on whether the parents want the hassle of looking after it) or there was a scheme in Wales a while back to re-populate woodlands by sponsoring and planting a tree - that could be quite a nice thing to do along with the Acorn keepsake thing if there's something similar nearby.

Someone bought him the Acorn thing when he was born...... :( and I bought his cousin a tree when he was born and got told off by his parents......when they went to visit the tree it took 3 hours to find it in the natural forest due to overgrowth and remote location....so I am not doing that again....... I might just give him cash LOL...50 pence in an envelope

I've been following this with some interest because my grandson was Christened last year and we didn't give him a memento. It's not really a South African tradition, or not in the families we know anyway, and we couldn't think of anything suitable at the time but we'd like to rectify this. We've been thinking of an SA Mint set of the 2013 coins, which also correspond with the year he was born, sealed in a presentation pack to protect them. Any comments?

That sounds like a plan

(y) I like that.
Another really nice idea. Perhaps you could get a wooden box engraved with his name / DoB etc to keep the presentation pack in.

I did this for friend's son many years ago and it was well accepted, as far as I know he still has them

Thanks guys, I think that's pretty much decided now. I'll sort it out when I'm back in SA shortly.

I got my nephew a St Christopher with a hand written note with a quote about life being a journey etc. My niece got a silver locket with a note about holding those you love close to your heart.
