Hi

Not shot a Christening before so looking for any tips/tricks of the trade? I'm more so into video, but when I do shoot photos I'm usually doing nightclub stuff/action sports so this is a little outside of what I'd usually do!

I plan on using natural light, don't want to use flash. Unsure what lenses to use though - I think I want to rent a 70-200 2.8 IS II...

Here's what I already have:

Canon 5D3
Canon 24-105 f4
Canon 50mm 1.4

Canon 600D
Sigma 17-50 2.8
Tokina 11-16 2.8

Think I want to shoot wide shots on my 600D with my Sigma. 70-200 2.8 would be nice on 5d3, or perhaps a 135 f2?

Opinions please!

I haven't shot a christening, but for a variety of family events recently I've rented a 24-70 f2.8 and it's been superb (I'm using a 5d3 too). Hoping to become an owner soon...

It might overlap with your 24-105 a bit, but the f2.8 looks lovely. For me it covers most shots I need then I use a 70-200 f4 for everything else.

If you are close to a branch of Calumet they do a weekend rental for the price of one day. Pick up Fri PM return before 10am Monday.

Would be ideal Will but I was planning on using the lens for a corporate video shoot a few days after the Christening and Caluments weekly price is quite a lot.

To be honest I'd say you've already identified what you should probably hire in the 70-200/2.8 realistically for the small difference you'd get from shooting the 135 @ f/2 over the flexibility of 70-200 @ f/2.8 I think I would go with the 70-200 honestly though the last christening I attended was when I was about 6 so I don't have any idea what would be the most used focal length but I can guess :)

I'd guess you will be fine with the kit you've got. Christenings from my experience are pretty relaxed, you can wander around, the family will be up at the front and milling about anyway so generally you don't need a very long lens. As always though, depends on the church and the chap in the dress.

The last christening I shot I just used my 24-70. No flash Just bumped the iso up. As somebody above said they are quite relaxed affairs usually and the ability to move around freely makes the job a lot easier. however your 24-105 should be more than good enough for this type of shoot.

Exactly what he said

Out of interest - why don't you want to use flash? Is it out of respect of others taking photos, the church's request or similar? Fair enough if that's the case (and well done to you for compromising your shots).

Otherwise I'd have thought flash (even on-camera bounce) would make a massive difference to the quality of shots. You're going to be gambling whether or not some shots are even feasible...

24-70 2.8 MK 2 100%

Could even do it all with one camera & one body, I do/have done
