Chris's Photo52 2010 - Weeks 22 & 23 Post #200, Page 7

I like it Chris, good colours under the arches... shame there wasn't more traffic about.

I know, the lighting was only there for a weekend as well, and I didn't have a chance to re-shoot!

Beautiful Chris.
Nothing at all to be disappointed with IMO. It may not have been taken with the theme in mind, but it WAS processed this week and it definitely fits the theme.

Love the composition, love the blue glow under the arches and the quality of the light in the shot. Just a shame that there weren't a few more cars to give some stronger light trails - it would have been a stunner!

I know, the lighting actually changed colours, I have the same shot but with pink and green arches too!

I quite like that; nicce composition and the lighting's great, especially with the blue arches :)

Cheers

Nice kight trails shot, I too have entered light trails but yours had much more going on in it making the light trails one of many things catching the eye.

Really like the blue under the arches, great shot

Dan

I think that's the key to good light trail shots, find something that will look good without the trails, then set up your exposure to capture them!

Cheers, week 6 coming up next!

Week 6 - "Present"

After toying with idea of trying to get 'present', as in past, future, and 'present', I decided to play it safe and shoot 1/12 of the Valentine's day present for my girlfriend! (no 'oooooh's, or 'ahhhhhh's please! :D)

I was pretty happy with it, it' taken ages to get the colour looking o.k, but I have a horrible feeling my monitor is quite a long way out, as it looked completely different on-camera to how it did when I'd transferred it, so any input would be very welcome!

Speed....I agree with previous comments on the light trails not standing out enough, great location with the bridge lighting. Would like to see you revisit and try again for more light trails.

The colour looks fine to me but I'm on a non calibrated laptop, cheeky idea to use Valentines day as a source of props :suspect: :D I may have done the same :lol:

Oooh - Aaah! :p

This is very good - You hvae just the right amount of framing and DOF for my taste. The colour looks fine on my monitor.

Lucky girl!

Cracking image of a rose. Lighting, focus and DoF are spot on and the colour is lovely and vibrant. Looks even better bigger

Colour looks perfect here, Chris. That's a really nicely composed shot of my favourite flower.

Yep. Colour's good here too.

That's a lovely shot Chris. Really sharp and very nicely composed.
It's beautiful just the way it is and you certainly don't need to do anything to change it. I do think that sometimes these flower close ups benefit from a little spritz of water just before shooting though, just to give them that fresh, dewy look.

Thanks for all the kind words! It's strange because it's the first shot I've taken in a while that I was genuinely happy with as soon as I took it! And yes, they went down very well  :)

Chris

Works well for me too, the colour looks spot on to me Chris, I can't add anything to those already commented.

Week 7 - "People"

Urgh, another topic involving pointing camera at other humans. Not my cup of tea!!!

Fortunately this week was my first sports assignment for the University newspaper, and I managed to get this shot which I'm happy enough with to use as my photo for this week (and means I don't have to do any more street photography!)

I think this is a good capture - I love the crisp image, bright colours and the moment frozen.

Phil

Nice shot Chris, i love to see Hockey shots, I played for Sheffield HC for many years and im currently recovering from a knee op as a result of playing Hockey. Its not often i see this sport covered. As an image it could probably do with a slight crop to the right to remove the trailing legs. Other that that its pin sharp and well captured. Great job with the uni paper too.

Actually as slight crop on the right & a heavy crop on the left probably leaves the image with most impact.

Cracking stuff, pin sharp and really tells the story. Bang on topic too :D

Spot on capture and nice and sharp. Agree with the others, cropping would enhance what is a cracking photo!

Thank you! It's so nice being able to use ISO 800 and not have to worry in the slightest about noise (unlike on the 450D). The pitch and the strips were all fairly bright colours, which helped liven up the shot a bit too!

It's funny you should say that, the team Durham was playing against was Sheffield! I don't know why it's not covered more, I remember asking a pro a while ago who thought it was 'too fast' to really become a more supported sport.

Ideally I'd have liked to have done that (heavy crop on the left, space to 'run into' on the right), but this was is the uncropped image, so in order to keep the same aspect ratio (I like it being 3:2 and have a bit of OCD regarding other ratios :D), I'd have to either chop off the head or feet. I tried a portrait crop too, but then I couldn't get the ball in as well :bang:

Great capture!

Thanks a lot guys (& girls)

Chris

must have been Sheffield Uni Bankers team in the away colours as they usually wear blue. I played for Sheffield Hallam HC so i hope the Durham boys were victorious:lol:

:plusone:As has already been said above Chris about the trailing legs and cropping them out but I understand completely about OCD's and you maintaining the ratio.
I like the colours in your image, its very sharp and a it certainly captures a moment of action. Well done, bang on theme:thumbs:

I'm with you on strange cropped format images. Maybe just clone out the leg on the right hand side. But you've captured the moment well. Nicely done

My first thought is that's going to hurt! . Cracking action shot.

I'm with the others on the stray legs on the right, but I understand your OCD.

Lovely colourful shot with plenty of action.

Ian.

Very nicely done Chris, very sharp and great timimg too. Crop to the right/left as mentioned will make it even better.

One of my old friends use to, not sure if he still does, played for The Old Loughtonians.

That's a great action shot, bang on theme and I love the colours, but I would like to see it cropped as suggested.

Jenny

I know, it's so irritating, but it was my frist time shooting sport so I'll live and learn - watch those legs and zoom out slightly to allow for cropping!

My first thought is that's going to hurt! . Cracking action shot.

Yeah, I must admit the guy didn't look particularly happy when he eventually picked himself off the floor! My first thought was for his hand, diving onto sandpaper is never a great idea!

Quality timing - really good capture

Cheers guys, I seemed to be o.k on timing (and of course 6.5 fps always helps :D), just composition to work on in the future!

Very good Chris. Bright, sharp and well captured action.

Playing catch-up now! So Speed, I like it - for me too much trailing is too much so yours is fine with me... and I love those arch colours!

Present... ahhh :D Loving the depth there and the richness-without-overdoing-it colour.

People, awesome, I love it, so different from your other shots and showing skill in a completely different area of togging.

Arthur

Wow, that people shot's a stunning bit of action. Great timing, and so sharp and isolated!

Thanks so much for taking the time, it's a nightmare going back through these threads to find other weeks attempts, so

I think it was more by luck than judgement however, there were plenty of blurry messes :D

Thanks a lot, I don't think I'll be threatening the pros yet though, there was more than a fair share of blurred, missed, or otherwise horrible shots that will never see the light of day!

I'm a bit behind, just took my week 8 earlier though so I'll get that up ASAP!

Chris

Week 8 - "Mechanical"

I was supposed to be visiting a quarry this week, so I was planning on taking a nice landscape with some heavy machinery in it, but the trip was postponed!

I could have gone for some mechanical engineers, but they're all a bit busy with deadlines at the moment, so I sent for the machine heads on my trusty guitar!

I've got a whole load of assignments on the go at the moment, so I haven't had a massive amount of free time to play with it, but I was fairly happy (I like the background - resisting the urge to use that infamous work 'bokeh', which I still can't propounce)....

Not my best effort, but for this week, it'll do :)

Chris

That's a really nice image Chris. B&W suits very well, DoF is spot on and the background is lovely and soft. Not sure it screams mechanical at me, but I don't really care :D

Like that, the DoF has been controlled really well and the bokeh in the background is a nice touch.
