Sad to hear last night of the death of Chris Killip. His book Seacoal is one of my touchstones.

Great photographer, sad to hear. Co-founder of the Side Gallery (still running today) and influential in the Amber Collective, one of the most important groups of social documentary photographers this country has ever seen.

A sad loss to the photographic world. I have the reprint of ‘In Flagrante’ - which is a wonderful book, as well as his ‘Last Ships’ zines from Pony and Cafe Royal so am reasonably familiar with his work, and he made some powerful images. Sea Coal is a fantastic body of work, although he didn’t give any / much credit for the help he received from a fairly well known local photographer in actually getting access to the camp, which was a bit disappointing. It shouldn’t detract from the work though!

There is something oddly compelling about it, indeed the whole Skinningrove series. I visited there last year, odd little place.
