Choosing my first DSLR - help wanted !

Hi there,

I'm "brand new" here, but hope to get a bit more active soon ...

I've always been a bit interested in photography, but never had the time or money to do much with it until recently ... and so I'm looking at purchasing my first DSLR camera.


At the moment I'm tied between the Canon 1100d and the 500d.

Jessops are offering the 500d with an extra 75-300mm lens for £479 :

However, I have seen the 1100d + 75-300mm in currys for the same price :

So I'm not sure which to go for ... some of the 500d specs are higher (but then again, some are lower), but the 1100 is a newer camera and more aimed at beginners ....



So any advice as to which to go for would be welcome !

Would you consider buying a refurb from canon? I recently did this with a 500D. The camera was as new, with the same warranty as a new one, just a big saving. There are no 550D's or 1100D's on there at the moment, but it could be worth keeping your eye on while you are making your mind up. My 500D with kit lens was £330 for reference, a fairly large saving. The link is below

Go and try several different makes at your local camera shop before deciding. There's nothing wrong with Canon and there are good reasons for choosing them, but they have their own ergonomics and way of doing things. Many people love them but some don't.

Hi Alex, a colleague at work has an almost brand new 1100d with kit lens, sigma 70-300, few filters and a small lowepro bag. I believe it has done less than 100 shots, selling due to loss of family member that bought it.

I know she is looking around £420 + delivery

If you are interested let me know and i can confirm all details, i will be creating a advert for her next week when she returns from annual leave.
