Choosing between D5100 and 600D

Hi all,

I'm sure this frustrating question has been asked numerous times, but if anyone can lend a helpful thought I'd be very appreciative.

These cameras seem close rivals but I wanted clarification on two points. I tried both today and the build quality of the Nikon seemed better, is this a general consensus? How valuable is the DOV preview button on the 600D (the D5100 lacks it) and lastly, does the 600D take 'warmer' photos? Some of the comparisons (see the boat shot here) seem to imply that it does: http://www.digitalrev.com/article/nikon-d5100-vs-canon-eos/ODk0MA_A_A

Many thanks.

Well I've not got hands on time with the 600D, but I'm very happy with the build quality of my 5100 so far....

As for "Warmer", it's a question of settings. I can set it to take warm photos by default, I can set it to take cool photos, or I can shoot RAW and do it all myself later.... It may be that the 600D defaults to warmer photos (it would seem that way on the assumption they haven't tweaked the settings much), but given the amount of control you have I wouldn't let that put you off.

Both excellent cameras just get whatever feels better in your hand

For me I think the 600D menus are more user friendly.

As a 650d owner I had a similar decision to make a few months ago. All the techno babble aside the Canon felt better in my hand so it won :)

You'll know which one you want if you have them side by side. They both have available to them an absolutely incredible lens family. Go into your local Jessops and see how they feel. If you still can't decide, just flip a coin!

Many thanks for the help guys. Think I'm going to go for the 600D! The build quality didn't feel quite as good, but it was far from awful and it significantly tops the D5100 on video and, for me, the look of the image is better.

Cheers!
