Looks like I will be doing quite a bit of train travelling over the next week or two.......any suggestions to saving money on the fares (which went up today)......too old for a student card and not old enough for a senior citizen card.....Ideas on a postcard......:)

Go by car. ;)
I'd google for the pre booked train fare sites.

Tesco Clubcard vouchers get doubled up if you use them to book rail travel via Redspottedhanky. Reminds me I still have thirty quids worth that need using before the end of the month

If you regularly travel with someone else you can get a two together card, missus and me saved the initial cost fourfold on one trip to Edinburgh

(This subject looked safe, keeping a wide berth of anything remotely political)

Never takes long

if its a block of travel i.e. a week or month then a season ticket will save you a bit of cash over daily returns.

read the small print with the "cheap fare" sites. there are often a tonne of clauses such as having to travel on specific trains (time and operator etc).

Can i add that look at first class too as i have found it cheaper to go first class over standard sometimes... best bet is to book in advance if you can as far in advance as you can.. i love east coast trains for first class too..

I got caught out with The Train Line a couple of years ago when I was in London and needed to get to Newcastle ASAP....so I went on and booked a ticket for the last train and raced to the station....when I tried to board I was stopped because the ticket only came into force at 10pm, which was the last train and according to the Station guard it wasn't usable until 1 second past ten, which in that case I would have missed the train as it departs at 10....I went to the ticket office to get clarification and he highlighted that in the T&Cs that the Ticket was only usable after 10pm. They did take pity on me and changed the ticket for a proper ticket and only charged me for admin and not the additional £90 as it was an emergency :)

There are, and you usually have to book well in advance.

However, if you can plan your arragenements around the fixed trains, you can save a packet.

I'm going Glasgow to Leeds in 3 weeks £17 each way on Sat PM and Monday AM. Fixed trains but I am ok with that
