Whether to take 70-200 on a family holiday, weighs a fair bit and in reality not sure how much will even use it?

What could happen...

You take the lens and don't use it, or use it very little

or

You dont take then lens, and then spend every day of the holiday regretting it when you realise you need it and it's 3,500 miles away at home.

If I had a lens of that value, i'd be hoping I had an opportunity to use it wherever I go..

Just my opinion :)

I know and this is the dilemma, also have to consider the ~2kg weight for hand luggage and having to lug it round the parks which if it doesnt get used and its 30 degrees I am going to be pretty fed up! Like you say though if I keep feeling I could have done with it I will be gutted

I've been thinking of the likes of an 18-200 for exactly this type of situation. Light's going to be good, hopefully, so "slowness" shouldn't really be an issue

Hate to inform you not 30 degrees at the moment they are having a cold snap my Auntie lives there.

Can be warm one day then colder (much) the next.

Lets hope it warms up for you.;)

I'm going in June (just 3 days after the Harry Potter park opens) and just know that the camera will see little use - I don't want to be lugging it around the parks. But I will be taking the 24-105 and my 40D (possibly returning with a 5DII :) )

The 70-200 whilst fantastic, is probably overkill and I have the same dilema! I'm thinking 10-22 and 24-105 but yes a tough choice :)

For places other than the parks it might be useful to take but I'll probably leave it :(

I am going in June also after a week in Arizona, it will be bloody hot then and I am not taking mine just a point and shoot. No room for them on the rides etc.

5D Mrk 11 are not that much cheaper over there as you have to pay the vat and import duty, already looked into this :shake:

In my experience on holiday, travelling light (ish) is good. Although I'm sure you'd get some grand shots with the 70-200, do you want to be lugging it round for a full day? You run the risk of it getting in the way of a nice family holiday, unless you've got some days set aside for photography where you'll think you'll need it. Heck I got tired of lugging a D700 and 24-70 around London last year for a few days, it just got in the way, and I didn't take any snaps on that which I couldn't have done on my LX-3 compact.

OK...

May 2010 will be my first year in the US with a SLR...

NY then Orlando...and I am having the same dilema...

I decided to look about to see if there were some good photos that had been taken...and stumbled upon these...

http://www.pbase.com/gilazouri/new_york_city

OK...they are taken in NY...but the concept is the same...he only uses two lenses...and mainly only one...

SO its all about you moving compared to the item moving...BUT Orlando...slightly different ball game...PERSONALLY...I would take both...because there is so much to see in the parades etc...but also so much that is a bit further away...and could do with the 70-200...at least in the Disney Parks...(you can usually rent lockers at the rides)

In short I just bought a new bag from the site...Lowepro Toploader 75AW...and camera grip and both 70-200 L & 17-50 Tammie fit in...so they are goin...

Dont know if you have been before...We've been goin for 15 years...so if you are a newbie to Florida...feel free to ask anything...if I can help I will...

(eg...never pay more than $10 a day upgrade (inc tax) to the top of the range car...they will go that low...try the Boars Head Meat (its a make make) Subs at PUBLICS...Superb & Cheap...and many other useless facts...

Enjoy your hols whatever lenses you take...and hope this helps...

Personally there's no way I would lug around a 70-200 on a family holiday... as has been said the 18-200 is a cracking alternative when you want to go light

to quote an old Irish relative and her wisdom (albeit aimed at my dilemma for taking a slightly heavy jacket to the pub when there was a possibility of rain that evening yet it looked fine as we left)...

"you are better looking at it than looking for it"

:D

Hi, this is my first post on here, been browsing a few days and have already lots of ideas, tips and hints!

I was in Orlando in feb and I took 2 different lens. Took 19-35 and 70-300 (its a long story why I dont have my 18-70 kit lens anymore.....).

I ended up using mainly the 19-35, but what I used the 70-300 for I was so glad I took it. I love taking photos of people on rides, capturing peoples expressions on the big drops (the new one in Universal Studios is good for this).

I am only a hobby photographer at the minute, but there are a lot of photo opps there and in one week I took around 1800 (The Sea World show's took up most of my photos). Which ever lens you take, you will have a great time, but as someone said above, if you take both, you might regret taking it and having to carry it around, but if you only take one, you might regret missing out on that perfect shot you want.

Enjoy your holiday anyway!

The f4 is a very different beast from the f2.8 IS! I'd happily take the f4 with me a great light lens.

I am off too Orlando and Fort Lauderdale in july i have been pondering what to do on the camera/lens front and have decided to just take the D700 & 24-70 2.8. If i took any more the photography would take over the family holiday and I am not going to let that happen

I didn't have a problem taking the camera on rides, even the wet ones stored in the muffin top 3000 it was very happy going down splash mountain and we got soaked but the camera was dry.

I'm not sure if I would take a big heavy lens unless I had a more compact way of carrying it, but then again I would really miss it when at Sea world. I'm a bit of a coaster nut and it is a pain to keep putting stuff in lockers and don't quite like the cages they have at some rides in parks for storing bags for riders. So I would take it but only take it in to Sea world I think and maybe Busch Gardens for the animals ohh and the safari in Animal kingdom ad if you go to the everglades thats a good day out and NASA don;t only launch shuttles so check out their launch schedule see if there is anything else going up while your there.

This isn't helping, I was looking for flights last night to Orlando to catch a shuttle launch and decided I couldn't really afford it due to a wedding and mums 60th birthday this year.

What was the point of buying it if you're not going to use it?

Rob...

This must seem a bit jokey to you after some of your escapades with a camera...

you'll not want to get too close in gator-land!!!!!!

take it and enjoy it :)

I had to take my 100-400 with me. Missus went nuts at me!

I'm so glad I did or I would have missed this:

Nick,

Glad you asked this as I am virtually in the same situ - hopefully going Nov (partner wants to dive with the dolphins) as I have Sigma 100-300 f4 & Nikon 28-70 2.8.. so this has been an intresting read...

would be intresting to hear what you actually did in the end - if you did take it & was it worth taking it or not...

Would that be lockers for storing whilst on that ride or for storing whilst visiting the whole park BIG-MAN?

have to?

if you want the warranty you do but you don't have to pay it. WHo's to say you didn't take it out there with you

Right....

I am going for the 11th time this September......and wait for it......am taking my new Sigma 50-500 ........ only reason is that I am hopefully....fingers crossed, lucky rabbits foot...and everything else lucky......is to see the last Space Shuttle launch.....

However the past three years I have been I have always taken my VR 300 Nikon with me as there are so many fantastic pictures you can get.....

This time due to the reason I will be taking 4 lenses, 2 bodies and my BIG manfrotto........luckily the tripod will be hidden in my golf bag.....then the camera stuff spread over the "laptop" bag and my hand luggage.......as there is a loophole that allows you to take a laptop bag as well as one piece of hand luggage......

Good place to sit to watch the parade and fireworks at Magic Kingdom is upstairs on the entrance to the park underneath the bell tower.....you need to get there early to command a frontline view but you get to see directly down main street to the castle and it does allow you to set up and take a lot of pics....

I went to Orlando in August last year and took my camera. I also had the same dilemma about taking my 70-300VR with me. I decided not to as it's pretty heavy and bulky. I have to say that i didn't really miss not having it. especially at Disney.

Everthing I shot was with the 18-55 Kit lens and it was superb for that sort of thing. there's no need for a telephoto IMHO unless you are doing anything wildlife-related.

I think the ideal lens around the parks must be a Nifty Fifty, but that's still on my wish list :(
A nice 50mm 1.4 would be beautiful for all the night-time stuff at low ISO ;) that's where you'll get the really impressive shots!

Have a great time! :)

I'm going soon too. I will not be taking any DSLR at all. I took my D300 to eurodisney a few years ago, and whilst the shots I got were great, it was a nuisance with the 18-200 VR. Now I have only the D3s, I really can't see me carrying that round the park.

I will be taking my G9, and I have an underwater housing for it too, which I will be trying out at discovery cove.

Having said that, I'm a complete newb to Florida, so I may have this completely wrong. But lugging all that gear all the way to Florida and then round the parks in the heat really doesnt do it for me.

Yeah...A little maybe - but I can also understand that those with families might not want the family vacation to turn into a Photo-Trip...
My GF is very understanding in that respect, but I can imagine that some partners (and the kids) might not be so undestanding about Mum or dad spending hours waiting for the right light when they could be having fun someplace else.

I think a DSLR and two lenses shouldn't be a problem though...

Also managed to squeeze the 550EX flash into the new bag...woohoo

Well after a lot of thought (and my wife telling me to take it as I would only kick myself in Seaworld/Animal Kingdom if I didnt) I will be taking the 70-200 and sticking it in my 16yr olds rucksack for travel purposes ;) Will let you know how I get on when I get back :)
