Hi all

I seem to have a neck muscle(s)/tendon thats constantly "taut", knock on problem from when I had the shoulder/neck nerve thing a year or two ago I think. Which professional service might be best to help me or manipulate me in order to make it relax?

Thanks.

I have tried a number of practitioners over the years seeking treatment for sciatica and related problems. The best I came across were chiropractors who practiced the 'McTimoney' method. They will make this clear in their advertising etc.

I’m always wary of many osteopaths and chiropractors as they will often encourage you to keep seeing them, sometimes unnecessarily in my view.

Physio was much better for me personally. You'll get differing opinions from pretty much everyone, depends on correct diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management/exercises.

Yoga? Anything that treats the cause rather than the symptom would get my vote - finding the cause is the hard bit! Good luck.

Go to your GP surgery and get the self referral form for the Physiotherapy service, bit of a wait, but it would be and was my choice

Cranial osteopathy is brilliant (and not just about bones or the brain) and has seen me through significant issues.... can’t recommend it highly enough. Another thing you might consider is Bowen technique. It’s a distant cousin and also very effective. If both those were presented to me when my neck, shoulders were bad, I would take the osteopathy every time.

Best option I can think of is a hooker ,definetly loosen you up :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

Preferably Latvian ,pay her in potatoes

Gets my vote too as long as it's not too troublesome. Sometimes an expert can help get you over a "crisis" and then get you back to preventative maintenance. FWIW I'd choose a soft tissue therapist over all the ones you list. (Usually) more training in problem areas than massage, (usually) better for soft tissue than a physio (who is better for mechanical stuff like a hip).

But much as I like yoga, I'm really enjoying Tai Chi ATM. It's like weaponised yoga :D

"Proper" physio every time, i.e. properly qualified. I've used physios for various things and they have always either solved the propblem or once told me to see my GP because it needed more investigation. From what I hear from friends chrio/osteo are very variable, it very much depdends who you get.

Thanks all for all the input. Plenty to think about.

OT (sorry Keith - but it seems you have enough answers to help you get sorted!)

Mrs Nod and a Tai Chi instructor had a play with a combination of the disciplines a couple of years ago and both had a lot of fun with the experiment. There's a form of yoga that almost follows the kata sequencing found in many martial arts - have a play with ashtanga. (It's one of the few classes that Mrs Nod finds time for [as a student] on a regular basis.)

I actually used to practise Ashtanga about 10 years ago. Loved it. Only stopped because my teacher moved to India.

Had a feeling it might have been your choice of the practices!
