Something big went bang in China

So big it was picked up by the US Geological Survey 100 miles away as a 3 magnitude earthquake

Some of the videos capturing the explosion made me take a sharp intake of breath

Maybe they all farted together

Just saw footage on BBC news.
That was some serious boomage!

The USGS equipment is meant to detect seismological activity like earthquakes, but also frequently picks up activity from mining blasts.
I wonder if it's also there to also detect what countries are testing bombs?

A very poor way of doing that if it were the case.
Above ground explosions transfer into the ground very badly apparently, which makes sense, and nuclear bombs detonate before they hit the ground iirc.

Oh I didn't know  :$ , just me and my suspicious mind ;)

Testing of Nuclear Ordinance is usually under ground though. Since the "Limited Test Ban Treaty" after the fallout from the Trinity testing and others following revealed even the smallest nuclear testing in the atmosphere was detrimental. NSS.

I am with Jonbeeza on the strategic placement of the sensors, for more than just the seismic event detection / early warning. With the American government there is always something more than meets the eye!

After watching the first explosion I thought thats gonna make a huge shock wave, waited then it hits, bigger than I thought. The second one is even worse. Caught in a shock wave like that close enough is likely enough to disrupt your internals......

Ah of course!
Completely forgot about the underground shenanigans.

the first video i saw early last night showed the first explosion clearly and debris falling back to earth and as it impacted the second bang just went off ,sad really sad with quite a huge loss of life and injury that will take a long time to recover from .hope no ones waiting for a new camera delivery from china ,it might be delayed a bit :muted: :schtum:

I think it started as a fuel explosion then set off a shipload of ordanance

Carry on Agent Mulder ;)

Sorry but looks like you will have to be Scully, as I am Mulder

On a serious note, it is sad news at the loss of life, and for those who are injured :(

Very sad stuff, all the sadder as in China the value of life is less, it looks like a dangerous goods warehouse went up containing a consignment of explosives.
They are saying it should never have been sited so close to a main road and an apartment block complex.

Yup, as plate tectonics develop das a field of geology, seismic detectors used for spying on nuclear weapons testing were a great source of data and a large body of the early academic work will have been based on that data. There are now civilian networks that do the same thing.
Likewise, sonar detectors in the Atlantic and Pacific to detect Russian subs have also been used in scientific research, both zoological (whales) and physical (deep-sea ridges).

And of course, a lot of the remote-sensing tech used in meteorology, etc, has a lineage stretching back to spy satellites.

If that was true, then it wouldn't be dominating the Chinese media.

There is more detail there, apparently it was a container packed with chemicals, in a secure area designated only for dangerous chemicals. It went bang and then a second, much worse secondary explosion occured soon after the firefighters arrived.

Chinese media has reported that the blasts happened after a shipment of explosives detonated in a warehouse owned by Ruihai Logistics, a company that specialises in handling dangerous and toxic chemicals.

Shipping containers loaded with chemicals or explosive ordinance, when correctly stowed, do not simply "go bang".
They require human assistance.

Could not agree more with this......Human error if not deliberate.

it depends on the chemical - there are some that go boom if incorrectly handle, and others that do it if mixed (so a leaking drum or a spill for example) - or it could have been an electrical fire that then caused a drum to go bang (lots of chemicals explode if heated)

with regard to ordinance - the most likely issue is a grenade or shell accidently left fused , while other options include detanators - which tend to go bang if dropped , or explosive filler sweating and becoming unstable (we don't know that this was new ordinance after all)
